career: Do the Math - How Many Associations Can You Handle? - 12/06/07 10:48 AM
This is a subject that has been rolling around in my head for quite some time, but I was never able to solidify a blog until I read Kathy Passarette's recent post Hmmmm....Which Organization should I join? While her approach was on a more general industry level, I have chosen to lay it all out there (what a surprise) from my own perspective. Since opening Details Staging and Redesign in 2005, I have been given several opportunities to join organizations, all offering endless benefits to my business. I'm sure they expect that I will be bringing some benefits to the table as well. Quite frankly, I

career: What a Stager Really Needs...Stamina - 11/07/07 02:19 PM
I officially opened for business September 1, 2005. I took a staging class and was led to believe that once I opened my doors, I would have to beat the business back with a stick. Just like any new stager, I was heartbroken to figure out how much it would take to get my business off of the ground. I had a choice to make - stick with it or throw in the towel. I decided that I had spent a large amount of money on the class and had invested so much time in it already, I should stick it out

career: For the Love of Tim Gunn.... - 10/15/07 11:13 AM
For those of you who do not know whoTim Gunn is, he is the gentle voice of encouragement and instruction on ''Project Runway" on the Bravo network and was recently given his own show 'Tim Gunn's Guide to Style', where he instructs fashion challenged women on how to dress for their shape and lifestyle while the whole time battling what he calls "the slobification of America." Tim's philosophy seems to be that what you wear reflects who you are and how you want people to view you, therefore you should dress appropriately and well if you want to present yourself as a respected

career: How James Frazier and a Home Inspector Revolutionized my Consultations - 05/22/07 09:33 AM
It has been a hot topic here on AR - how do you do your written consults? Do you take photos and notes, then go home and write them up? How much time do you spend? Is it worth what you are paid? So on and so forth. Obviously, not process is right for everyone, so we all do it differently. It used to be that I would walk through a house with a client discussing certain things with them, taking photos, etc. Then I would go home spend countless hours writing up every tiny detail, writing and rewriting until I couldn't

career: My Activerain Induced Epiphany - 12/19/06 08:15 PM
First, let me thank Phyllis Pafumi and Sheron Cardin - without them this blog would not be possible! Since I began staging, the subject of price has always been an issue for me, as I'm sure it has been for others. I have become very comfortable with my fees when it comes to staging an occupied home, but the vacants have always been a struggle. I am a hard core bargain shopper and always pick up some great deals and because of that have been able to keep my rental fees very low. The only problem this presents if that I would

career: So, How Did YOU Get Started? - 12/11/06 04:00 PM
As I've meandered through the postings here on AR, I've been struck by the passion and committment of the stagers who participate here. It led me to wonder, how did all of us end up in this wonderful, crazy profession? I'd REALLY like to know. What led YOU to this point in your professional life? I'll start: 4 years ago, after the completion of a relatively unnecessary renovation, my husband and I started kicking around the idea of purchasing a larger house. The only hitch was that we wanted to stay in the same neighborhood and larger homes here do not come onto the
