I officially opened for business September 1, 2005. I took a staging class and was led to believe that once I opened my doors, I would have to beat the business back with a stick. Shopping for inventory is a crucial part of the staging industry when specializing in vacant homes and builders models. Many times I have been tempted to (and did) purchase an item based solely on the great deal I was getting, only to find that it didn't flow with anything else I had in stock therefore it was useless to me. I had to come up with a better way to build a solid and cohesive inventory, because in most cases I do not have a ton of shopping time to pull a look together. For several months now, I have been cringing every time I have to explain to people what a home stager is and exactly what it is that I do. I came to realize that the term 'stager' is confusing to most people and unless they have heard the term used in the proper context, they can't imaging what it might mean. I have also been finding it difficult to market myself in the vacant and builders model arena using that moniker as most people associate staging with occupied homes. This week was very busy for me. I had two vacant staging projects to complete - both secured last week. For me, this is a story of the contrast we often deal with in the staging industry. It has been a hot topic here on AR - how do you do your written consults? Do you take photos and notes, then go home and write them up? How much time do you spend? Is it worth what you are paid? So on and so forth. Obviously, not process is right for everyone, so we all do it differently. First, let me thank Phyllis Pafumi and Sheron Cardin - without them this blog would not be possible! Since I began staging, the subject of price has always been an issue for me, as I'm sure it has been for others. I have become very comfortable with my fees when it comes to staging an occupied home, but the vacants have always been a struggle. I am a hard core bargain shopper and always pick up some great deals and because of that have been able to keep my rental fees very low. The only problem this presents if that I would

As I've meandered through the postings here on AR, I've been struck by the passion and committment of the stagers who participate here. It led me to wonder, how did all of us end up in this wonderful, crazy profession? I'd REALLY like to know. What led YOU to this point in your professional life?
