Okay, not what you generally think of as gluttony.
I don't go to the freezer for a carton of Chunky Monkey. I don't go by Krispy Kreme when the "HOT" sign is on and buy a box and sit in the parking lot eating the whole thing while its still hot (though right about now....).
I am a reading junky.
All the 12 step programs tell you to first admit your addiction to then be able to look at it clearly. Some addictions, like eating, it is unwise to eliminate from your life since that in effect eliminates your life, but you do have to examine what is healthy and unhealthy eating. So it is with my reading.
As a child, even when quite small, my addiction could result in sitting and reading the want ads if I couldn't find anything else I hadn't already "consumed" in the house. Thankfully, it never led to me reading romance novels, or anything in or of itself bad (though a few articles on mixing certain incendiary chemicals...hmmmm).
If I have a day off, and need a mental health day off, reading can be a good, cheap therapy (yes, only if I refrain from buying the books unless they are of such quality to stand up to MANY re-readings. Let's just say all the local librarians are probably on a first name basis with me.) If not a day off, I finish my list of daily "to do's" quickly enough to get some evening reading in.
Good thing I read quickly, or I would too often be dragging around at work or home the next day from "just want to finish this section" delays to turning off my light. My husband stays up late finishing off things in his study, so while he is "productively using his time", I can crawl into bed for a read and "wait up for him" while turning pages.
To help control my "urges", I also usually try to avoid the monthly Friends of the Library book sales unless I have someone with me. Not quite an accountability partner, more like someone who I think will look at my selections with a wondering eye if I pick up too many because "look how many I can get for my $5 budget." I try to visit the library NOT on the first Saturday of the month. I even try to return books to the drop so all those selections don't tempt me to overindulgence.
So, I've not entered a 12 step program.
In fact, instead, I've joined a book club.
Well, at least now I'll have other like minded "addicts" to discuss what I liked or found flawed in what I read. Plus, they let me know about authors I haven't discovered yet.
By the way, if you know of any interesting books I might like....
