dc property: Becoming the Millionaire Next Door - 01/31/12 02:37 PM
Becoming the Millionaire Next Door Ten years ago my husband and I hired an electrician to fix a simple problem in our home. He was a nice, unassuming guy in his late 50’s, and the more we talked with him, the more we liked him. It was during this conversation that he told us a story about his life that has inspired me to this day. When “John” was a young man of 28, he bought his first DC property. It was a small home in a decent area. He got a roommate who paid ½ of the mortgage and

dc property: Buying a Home in DC But Not Sure you can Afford it? - 01/02/12 04:39 PM
Want To Buy A Home in NW DC, But Don’t Think You Can Afford It? DC is an expensive city – an opinion that almost everyone who’s either lived here or visited can agree on. It also has some of the most expensive real estate in the country. But, unlike a lot of other expensive cities, it’s weathered the real estate downturn in spectacular fashion. According to Kiplinger’s it’s the #1 City, Where Home Prices Have Held Up The Most. Check the NY Times, The Wall St. Journal, Fortune Magazine – all have written about the strength of DC’s housing market.

dc property: Considering Where to Live in Washington DC? - 10/05/11 11:56 AM
Where to live in DC is an interesting dilemma and one that I hear pondered all the time by people new to the DC area. It’s also purely a matter of preference because DC truly has something for everyone. In other words, it depends what you are looking for in a DC neighborhood and how much you have to spend. In terms of Washington DC property, if you are interested in a suburb within the city, there are some great neighborhoods that would work well for you – namely Chevy Chase, Forest Hills, and Crestwood, just to name a few. If

dc property: Are You Looking for a Home or an Investment? - 07/05/11 07:14 PM
Are You Looking for a Home or an Investment? I recently worked with a lovely couple who were looking for a home in DC. They wanted an older home with charm and at least 3 bedroom and two baths. They didn’t mind if it needed updating, but wanted no major renovation projects. It should be near a metro, for resale purposes. And, most importantly, they wanted to be able to put a rental apartment in the basement. We looked at homes for a while and of course, the longer we looked, the more their needs and desires crystallized. A yard became

dc property: How Clean is Your House? - 03/20/11 08:15 AM
What is the Definition of a Clean House? Before I list a DC property for sale, I spend time going through the house and discussing what needs to be done with the Sellers. The number one thing I recommend is not painting or buying furniture, it’s cleaning and de-cluttering. I’ve found that there are many different definitions of clean. My expectation of clean is completely clutter-free surfaces. That means removing toiletries from the bathroom counters; dressers tops should be completely clear except for a decorative item or two; shelves should be organized; toys and piles of clothes should be put

dc property: DC Property Foreclosures Help Renters Become Buyers - 02/15/11 10:17 AM
Foreclosures Help Renters become Buyers When I meet first time home-buyer clients for the first time, I always congratulate them for coming over from the dark side (renting) into the light (buying). No more paying someone else’s mortgage. Not to mention the tax benefits of home ownership – it truly is a wonderful thing, even if I am biased. Recently, I met a young couple who were looking for their first home. They currently pay $1800/mo in rent and were looking to pay no more than that, in total, for a house. Sound reasonable? Let’s put this in perspective -- I

dc property: Spreading the Good Real Estate News! - DC Property - DC Real Estate - Long and Foster - 02/11/11 12:06 PM
Spreading the Good Real Estate News! It is rare that I hear good news about the real estate industry. The media focuses almost exclusively on bad news. And there are plenty of negative stories to report, if that’s what you are looking for. But there is also more than enough good news to go around. As a Washington, DC-based realtor I am fortunate, indeed. I live in one of the strongest real estate markets in the country. But I am sure that good things are happening in other places as well. I thought I would do my part to spread

dc property: How to Deal with "Last Minute" Clients - 02/10/11 05:09 PM
Dealing with “Last Minute” Clients I used to be one of those people who procrastinated, and then in a frenzy of stress and activity got whatever needed to be done, accomplished. This was an insane way to live. Talk about being stressed out – I was miserable. And to think, this was something that I inflicted upon myself on a regular basis. Thank goodness, I finally realized the error of my ways and changed my motis operandi. I’m far from perfect, but I am much happier planning in advance and watching as things fall nicely into place. In my work
