In my 22 years as a member of the Professional Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association of America, one thing I noticed is how many skiers could make a few pretty good turns then slowly pick up speed and finally either having to come to a stop or even worse, well, I won't go there. When I would question how they would think of controlling speed, the answer was always the same, "make another turn". I must congratulate Vail Resorts for their truly amazing work considering this was a lean snow year. Their snowmaking crews and especially the groomers did a fantastic job "Snow Farming" in Vail and Beaver Creek this past winter. Our resort owners and guests could not beleive how good the ski experience was. with less than 2 weks remaining, Vail is still hopping and there are lots of special events. Recently I visited a friend in Stratton Vermont for a long weekend. He had mentioned to me that, "in the east, the snow is harder, so skiers should be stronger, but everyone skids thier turns". With today's new equipment, skis will hold much better, even on eastern hard pack. The key is learning how to balance on an edged ski. When my children were young, it was as simple as saying, "I want to see the bottoms of your skis", when below them on the hill. We in the ski resorts know how every flake of snow received this year has been "white gold" It was amazing that during the holidays, Vail visitors and resort owners alike were impressed of the quality of snow considering that lack of it early. Huge kudo's must be given to the snowmaking and grooming crews at Vail and beaver Creek. The good news is that in the past few weeks, we have received more that 2 feet and more snow is in the forcast. Considering how little snow Vail, and for that matter, many ski resorts around the country have recieved, thanks to great snowmaking, skiing is quite good! I went up this morning with a Mexican client and we are genuinely tired and had a great day. Vail snowmaking covers almost 500 acres and Beaver Creek, 800 acres. While there is nothing like mother nature, with a bit of forthought, a great day or week can be had.
