environment: Urban farming taking root in Santa Monica - 01/05/12 10:25 PM
I love the Farmers' Markets and enjoy my green thumb! I had to share this article from the Santa Monica Daily Press... CITYWIDE — People flock to Santa Monica's thrice-weekly Farmers' Markets for their pick of fresh produce from the Golden State, but a handful of Santa Monicans are joining a movement that takes "local" to a whole new level. With the help of a Los Angeles-based company called Farmscape (www.farmscapegardens.com), approximately 10 Santa Monicans brought the farm home to their front and back yards in the form of raised beds that Farmscape's employees tend once a week.Depending on the size of

environment: Malibu Legacy Park Project - 11/10/10 05:50 PM
Adjacent to the Malibu Country Mart was a vacant, 20-acre (81,000 m2) plot of land owned by billionaire Jerry Perenchio and sold to the City of Malibu in 2005 with strict deed restrictions prohibiting any further commercial use. The City at this site is building Malibu Legacy Park. The City hopes that a state-of-the-art water treatment plant already built will use stormwater runoff that accumulates at the park, making it into an environmental cleaning machine that will end the City’s stormwater pollution contribution to Malibu Creek, Malibu Lagoon, and the world-famous Surfrider Beach. The Malibu Legacy Park Project responds to critical

Investing in a fruit tree is a win-win-win-win proposition. You'll save money on your grocery bill; you'll improve the health of your family by assuring an ample supply of healthy produce (which you can grow organically if you want); you'll enhance your landscape with a pretty spring-flowering tree; and you'll have the satisfaction of growing your own food. As a bonus, the whole family will learn a delicious lesson about nature and gardening. "With fruit trees, the return you get on your input is quite a bit," says Ron Perry, a Michigan State University professor of horticulture who specializes in

From simple home improvements to costlier upgrades, we'll guide you to savings during uncertain times for energy prices. Taming Soaring Bills Some of the simplest ways to save money during energy spikes include weather stripping and programmable thermostats. But you may also want to consider more expensive attic fans, high-efficiency windows, and reflective roofs. environment: Pacific Palisades Real Estate Blog - Saturday 01-23-2010 - Rebates for solar water heaters approved - 01/23/10 07:07 PM
For three years, California has offered homeowners financial incentives to install solar panels that generate electricity. Now, solar water heaters will get their moment in the sun.California energy regulators on Thursday approved a $350 million rebate program for homeowners and businesses that install solar thermal water heaters, which use the sun's warmth to heat water for the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. Such systems have been around for decades, but they've received little of the attention paid to photovoltaic solar panels. And yet, using sunlight to heat water cuts the amount of natural gas or electricity a building needs. Most California

Happy Monday everone. I am feeling better. The meds have left my body and the pain is slightly elevated! With that said, I am thankful to be alive and fortunate enough to spend this recovery time with my family. There were times where the natives wanted to vote me off the island :) haha! I found this article very interesting.... Environmental groups are mounting a last-ditch effort to derail key elements of the state's first-in-the-nation green building code -- a major initiative of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration. The proposed code, likely to be adopted Tuesday, would slash water use, mandate the recycling

environment: Malibu Real Estate Blog - Saturday 01-02-2010 - Christmas Tree Recycling Program - 01/02/10 11:09 AM
Happy New Year everyone! My apologies for not posting yesterday as it was a recovery day for me :) I celebrated my 37th birthday on New Years eve and partied with my loved ones at the Shangri La hotel in Santa Monica. We had a blast!! The City of Malibu encourages residents to recycle their Christmas trees after the holidays. Remember, trees must be free of metal/plastic stands, as well as all ornaments, lights, and plastic wrap (including tree bags) before drop-off or they cannot be treated as green waste. Trees treated with fire retardant or flocking ARE NOT acceptable.

It appears that the Temescal Water Project may have some opposition! When I first heard about this project, I was elated that finally something was being done to control or stop the runoff into the ocean. I lived in Santa Monica for over 2 decades and can say that when there was a heavy rain, it was very bad for the ocean! Here is the article from the Palisadian Post... Happy Thursday everyone! Here is more green tips for making your kitchen environmentally friendly... Between the refrigerator, oven, microwave, and lights, kitchens can consume a lot of energy, but here are some ways to reduce your kitchen's energy usage and save some money: "Right size" your appliances: The larger your appliances, the more energy they consume. And, large appliances take up more space, meaning you'll need to heat and cool additional square footage to accommodate them. Finding the "right size" appliance to fit your needs-instead of just buying the largest one available-can help you to save energy. Replace old refrigerators:

environment: Pacific Palisades Real Estate Blog - Tuesday 02-03-2009 - Why Real Estate is a Green Issue - 02/03/09 08:59 PM
Did you know that in the United States, homes are responsible for 21 percent of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions? That fact, plus rising energy costs and a decision by California's Public Utilities Commission mandating that new housing developments are "zero net energy" by 2020, has caused consumers, homebuilders, homeowners, property managers, REALTORS®, local governments, schools, and others to focus on the energy-efficiency of homes and buildings. That's why real estate is a green issue. As these groups and individuals seek ways to reduce the energy costs of homes, even more emphasis will be placed on eco-friendly designs and cost-savings. If you are
