New coach, new players, new year…the KC Chiefs are off to a great start this year!!

If you haven’t made it out to camp, this week is your last chance to watch them gear up for the upcoming football season here in St. Joe. Crowds have been great this year, even with some days of extreme heat.

The players, coaches & staff have been wonderful in talking with their fans, giving autographs and making it well worth making the trip out. They enjoy having you there to root them on, just as much as you enjoy going out to watch them!

47th Annual Air National Guard Softball Tournament....St Joseph MO

Air National Guard Softball teams from all over the United States will start rolling into town this week. Around 45 teams have registered to participate in the 47th Annual Tournament, bringing approximately 750 players to the area.

St. Joseph has previously hosted ANG Softball tournaments in 2004 & 2005. The tournament will kick off on Wednesday with registration, opening party and a home run derby.

Opening ceremonies will take place at Heritage Park Softball Complex at 7:45 AM on Thursday. Games will be played Thursday from 8:30 AM to 10 PM and Friday and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 8 PM. Brackets include men’s, women’s & coed teams.

The tournament is being hosted by the Missouri 139th Airlift Wing in conjunction with the City of St. Joseph Parks and Recreation Department and the local Convention & Visitors Bureau. The tournament is expected to have an impact of over a half a million dollars on the community.

Events like this are truly great for our community - not only do we get to show off our wonderful facilities but visitors get the chance to visit one of the most historic cities ever that they may not have visited otherwise.

There is no gate admission and games are open to the public. Stop out and enjoy some great ball, an enjoyable time and welcome these troops to our city!!

Local CIP Sales Tax....APPROVED by local voters!! St Joseph MO 64501

The current One-half cent CIP Sales Tax that is the only source of funding for major public infrastructure in the City of St. Joseph was passed unanimously by local voters!

The tax has been in place since 1989, giving one-half cent sales tax funds to the Capital Improvements Program (CIP). This money is used to keep our community growing, maintain streets, safety and improve or build buildings and facilities to keep our city up-to-date.

To date, every project that has ever been promised has been or is scheduled to be completed. Just to name a few of the current improvements this tax has provided: Renovations of Phil Welch Stadium, City Hall, Missouri Theater, Hike and Bike Trail, New Fire Station on St. Joseph Avenue, New REC Facility - to replace Munchenburger and the St. Joseph Aquatic Park.

A committee formed of local neighbors and citizens has been formed to help decide where to best spend these funds. Ideas brought to the plate for 2013 capital improvements include: Maintaining and repairing local streets, including a large project to restructure the intersection at Karnes Road and St. Joseph Avenue, updates at local parks and ball fields, updates to 2 fire stations, and continued maintenance and updates to local civic facilities. To notice projects that are results of the CIP tax signs mark the spots including the completion date and the dollars spent. Signs are also placed in locations that are about to undergo renovations or repairs using these funds. This shows local citizens exactly where the money is being used.

It is hard to believe that August is already here. Which means…it won’t be long until schools are back in session here in St. Joe. Both a dreadful and happy thought! It is always nice to get the kiddos back in the classroom, but the prep can empty your wallets quickly.

August 4, Stop by the school bus at both Walmart stores in St. Joseph and donate school supply items for area students in need. Collected items will be distributed August 9 through the Salvation Army Back to School Fair.

I love you, You're Perfect, Now Change~by Western Playhouse~St Joseph

‘I love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change’ presented by Western Playhouse is a production that is hilarious and heartfelt. The play consists of 20 unrelated vignettes that are both awesome and awful relating to dating, marriage, and all the things between.

Starring two women and two men, ironically two of the stars are actually newlyweds. It is quite the experience – fun and challenging. Some scenes they are partners and some not, so they have had to learn how to adapt in many ways. Stars Jessica Elder Agnew and Shaun Agnew both say they have enjoyed the experience and they would definitely do it again, it has been a joyous few months and a wonderful learning experience. The other stars include a women from Kansas City and a male from the MWSU Arts Department.

Western Playhouse is a summer professional theater that uses local area actors. Each year they present amazing shows to communities all over.

The sarcastic comment is often made that our city, as well as many others, have a Walgreens or Wal-Mart located at every corner.

When plans for the city’s new REC Center were announced similar statements were made about St. Joseph having too many work out facilities. With many years of planning and building underway, this impressive facility will ‘awe’ those that ever had that thought cross their minds.

This town definitely doesn’t have anything compared to this that is available for everyone to use, owned by the city, with this variety of equipment and space. If you haven’t seen the new facility...you really need t go check it out. Once again...WAY TO GO ST. JOE!!!

St. Joseph has another state-of-the art facility to add to their inventory.

The St. Joseph Recreation, Exercise and Community Center has officially opened to the public (7.12.12)! Located at the corner of 28^th Street and the Parkway, next to Phil Welch Stadium, the center has many new amenities to offer the community. The facility was built to replace the Munchenberger Recreation Center and has been in the works for a few years now.

This awesome facility has some of the newest, best equipment there is for cardio, strength building and weight training. Also, 3 full size courts, an elevated walking track, community room available for parties, events, and more, all in an indoor facility. The hours of operation are Monday thru Friday from 6 AM to 10 PM, Saturday 6 AM to 7 PM and Sunday Noon to 5 PM. Fees vary; memberships are available on a monthly and yearly basis, offering many reasonable price breaks for families, companies, seniors, etc. You can also pay individually as you go if you just want to use specific areas of the facility. Gym floors and the community room are available for rent by the hour. The facility was built to serve the community, so the pricing was set with that in mind. It is very reasonable for anyone to join.

Ground Round Restaurant...St Joseph's Hot Spot...Relocates Downtown

The Ground Round restaurant has moved from its long time home at the corner of the Belt Highway and Frederick Avenue to Downtown St. Joseph. The move took place earlier this month. They are now located at 6^th and Edmond, the building formerly occupied by Em Chamas Brazilian Grill. The locally owned and operated family friendly bar and grill has been a hot spot for years. The hours and menu remain the same as well as providing free popcorn, weekly specials, happy hours and more.

In the beginning questions were brought to the table regarding City’s TIF money investments and MD Management (East Hills Mall), but after many discussions everyone agreed it was a great move. It allowed East Hills to the opportunity to capture additional revenue from the existing site and the Ground Round the ability to remain doing business in St. Joseph.

Driving by many times during the day, I would say the owners of Ground Round have to be pleased with their decision. The downtown location has been booming with business over the last couple of weeks giving downtowners a new spot to eat, as well as bring long time patrons of the Ground Round to the downtown area.

It has been said that Em Chamas will relocate to another property downtown, but at this time hasn’t been finalized or opened.

America’s Favorite Cherry Candy Bar-Cherry Mash-St Joseph MO

This company introduced the ‘Candy Cop’ and makes what is known as ‘America’s Favorite Cherry Candy Bar’.

Chase Candy Company, located in St. Joseph, Missouri has been making candy since 1876. Known for using only the best ingredients and making small batches at a time, the old fashioned way, to maintain consistency and great taste, the company is still in business today. In the first 50 years of business, Chase Candy produced over 500 different types of candy. Not all were hits, but the Cherry Mash Candy bar created in 1918 sure was and still remains their best seller.

A Cherry Mash is a candy bar is a mound of chopped peanuts blended with a chocolate coating over a smooth cherry fondant. The Cherry Mash is well known around St. Joseph and the Midwest. It is often given to visitors as a welcome token to the city and typically handed out to all that drive thru the famous Winter Wonderland at Krug Park each holiday season. It is a ‘you love it or you hate’ it type of candy bar. Many people that have moved away purchase a bag of mashes first off when they come back to visit. Others are known to send packages of them as gifts – to family and friends that once lived here and even those that have never had one. The Cherry Mash Candy Bar has over time become a great marketing tool for the city, and we all want everyone to at least try one!

135 years later, the company still operates where it was originally located but in a new, purpose factory that was built in 2005. The Yantis family owns and operates the business and has invested in a number of new technologies over the years to stay up with production, sales and marketing. Although unable to offer public tours, you can still stop by and purchase factory-fresh candy at 1307 South 59^th Street, St. Joseph, MO 64507.

Fireworks, Baseball, Parades, Fun Celebrations in St Joseph MO

The 4^th of July is most known for family gatherings, barbeques and big booming fireworks. I do love fireworks…and great food but what is Independence Day really about?

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

On July 3^rd the St. Joseph Mustangs hosted the U.S. Military All Stars Game, a part of the Red, White & Blue Tour here in St. Joseph, Missouri. The historic tour delivers patriotic events designed to honor America. The tour will visit 45 states and 3 countries and compete in 100 games at all levels each year. “Passing the Flag” and “Walk of Honor” ceremonies take place prior to the game. These choreographed events celebrate American history in a moving tribute to those lost in the 9:11 tragedy. “Over the past decade, the Ground Zero Flag on site when President George W. Bush delivered his famous “Bullhorn Speech” following the September 11 attacks has been presented by the U.S. Military All-Stars to thousands of heroes in ceremonies all over the world. This unique and historic tour provides everyone the opportunity to honor, view and touch the Ground Zero Flag during its cross country journey back to New York for the Annual Anniversary of 9-11.”

The tour celebrated its 19^th year this year and is recognized as the most popular exhibition in the world providing a patriotic experience, great entertainment and a once in a lifetime fan experience. Armed Forces and First Responders participate while off duty to support our brave men and women overseas.

There was also other parades in our neighborhood on July 4, starting with the Lake at Twelve Oaks Childrens Parade where children arrived in wagons, scooters, bikes, while some chose to walk in their Red White & Blue attire. This is a yearly event that parents, grandparents line the streets celebrating Independence Day.

Later in the day the Geese at the Lake at Twelve Oaks Neighborhood had their own parade in the 100 degrees temperatures

July is here, the prep has begun, Missouri Western State University and the St. Joseph community are ready for some football!

The Kansas City Chiefs will return in late July for their 3^rd Training Camp in StJoMo! And………………..as if that isn’t exciting enough, it is official the Arizona Cardinals will be joining them for a few days during the second week of camp to practice along side of them. Two NFL teams here in St. Joe…WOW!

Although attendance wasn’t as large in 2011 as in 2010, due to the flooding and the late announcement of camp dates because of the NFL lock out, it still had a great impact on the community. Each year the camp brings in hundreds of players, coaches, trainers and other staff. And we all know, Chiefs fans are diehards, they love nothing more than to come and root them on as they prepare for the season. We can only expect that 2012 will be even bigger and better.

Be sure to stop out by and see the Kansas City Chiefs Training Camp in StJoMo!! Even if you aren’t into football I promise you will enjoy yourself. You can check out the large merchandise tent, enjoy wonderful food, beer tent, the children’s play area (bounce houses, face painting & more), music and more. And for those of you that are avid football fans, autographs will be available after each practice session. Also, they plan to have more covered seating and misting areas this year to try and keep you all cool.

This really is an awesome experience for you, me and the entire community. Embrace it. Support it. Spread the word. Enjoy it. I promise, you won’t regret it.

St. Joseph's newest hotel, Candlewood Suites is open for business!! A ribbon cutting took place on Friday, June 29^th and tours were provided to the public.

The extended stay property is furnished for comfort and daily living. Each room has a full kitchen, also available an outdoor gazebo and grilling area. The Fitness Center and Business Center are both available 24-hours a day. Each suite includes free Wi-Fi, free parking and free laundry facilities.

Guests were amazed as they toured the NEW facility. The rooms are so spacious; comfy beds, full size refrigerators and dishwashers in every room. In room television, CD players and cable/satellite. And the best ooh and ah came when they saw the large selection of movies available for all guests to take to their rooms to watch free of charge.

The Ehrhardt’s are very happy to open the property here in St. Joseph, MO. They own many properties in Missouri, mainly along Highway 36. They love the ‘welcoming and at home feel’ St. Joseph businesses and citizens have provided.

Today, I collected my 3rd trading card!

So art really is not my thing, at least which is what I thought. After my adventure this afternoon, I have once again proven myself wrong. Wow, what a beautiful collection and great experience.

Off of Frederick Avenue between Noyes Blvd. and 36^th Street sit many huge, extravagant homes. I have always adored them while driving past. Today I stepped inside one of them, a Georgian style mansion that was built around 1933 as the home of William and Lean Albrecht. William Albrecht founded the Western Tablet Company, later known as Westab and is known today as Mead Products. The mansion was given to the St. Joseph Art League in 1965 after Mr. & Mrs. Albrecht’s passing, and today houses one of Midwest’s finest collections of 18^th, 19^th & 20^thCentury Art.

I was amazed at the collection and exhibits, also the education and classes offered. Not only did I enjoy the gallery, I was able to tour the entire facility including what used to be the Albrecht’s living area. Every step I took something beautiful and breathtaking to see. What a 2-for-1!

Touring the museum today I gained a new appreciation for art. I strongly encourage you to take time to visit the Albrecht Kemper Museum of Art, located at 2818 Frederick Avenue in
St. Joseph, MO. Not only to collect your trading cards, but to see a collection of art that is one of the best around. Also to learn more about the Albrecht’s, the ‘Big Chief’ and see the gorgeous detail of this mansion. It truly is a hidden gem.

Join the fun... Celebrate Lake Contrary History Festival-St Joseph MO

Lake Contrary Development Association is hosting a craft and flea market festival on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 8 AM to 4 PM at Lake Contrary. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of a new pump for the lake.

Local Historian, Clyde Weeks will be featured with a presentation of his book ‘Lake Contrary Glory Days’.

Many remember or have heard stories of the long gone glory days of Lake Contrary, the development which was one of Midwest’s first resorts. From its opening in the 1880’s by the light and power company as a means to selling more electricity, to its closing as an amusement park in the early 1960’s, Lake Contrary was quiet the place to be for decades. It had summer homes, traveling acts, yacht and horse races, rides, a river- boat, and more.

Enough time has passed since it’s closing that this book is a positive feature to understanding and appreciating its history and its glory days.

For years Mr. Weeks has been gathering memorabilia-cards, photographs, booklets, menus, fans, scraps of paper, pins, badges--anything he could find about Lake Contrary.

Their are many old photos of the Park in the book which was published in the memory of the Ingersolls - Bob and Miss Anna - who brought joy to so many for a half century.

Special thanks to the editor of the book ‘Lake Contrary Glory Days’, Clyde Weeks for his love and passion for St. Joseph and keeping its history alive!

The American Public Transportation Association has declared June 21^st ‘National Dump the Pump Day’! Dump the pump day started in 2006 when gas prices were over $3 per gallon. A day created to encourage people to use public transportation and save money.

Are high gas prices breaking you? Sick of the rising prices? Although gas prices aren’t as high as they were a few years ago, it is still depressing to drop over fifty dollars each time I need to fill up. I remember when gas was less than fifty cents a gallon. During this economic hardship it seems we are all trying to pinch pennies any way we can. When I stumbled across information on Dump the Pump day it got me thinking.

I hate to pay the high prices, but I haven’t drastically made any changes to my daily transportation schedule. If I did how much could I save? Does the local public transit provide transportation to all the places I need to go in a day? Is it worth it? I decided to do a little research, below are a few of the interesting facts I learned.

The latest APTA Transit Savings Report shows that a two person household that downsizes to one car can save about $10,000 a year on average.

Every $1 billion invested in public transportation creates and supports 36,000 jobs.

Public transportation use in the United States saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.

In 2011, Americans took 10.4 billion trips on public transportation.

So…I am anxious to hear, have you switched to public transportation, started car pooling, downsized…??? If so, what are the pros and cons?

which are all along the same road as Heritage Park along the river and were all also tremendously affected by the ’11 flood. The Nature Center, Casino, and trail have all been renovated, repaired and are open for business!

Amazing to think a year has passed…and with all the damage that was done to the attractions in

St Joseph MO are back in business like it never happened.

Surviving a flood.....again....St Joseph MO 64501

This time last year the Mighty MO began to rise and quickly started pouring out into our city. Day by day businesses, facilities, and roads were closed due to the high waters. As the summer went on flooding continued, situations got better for some, and worse for others.

By the end of summer Heritage Park Softball Complex located on Waterworks Road, was completely under water and forced to close. State tournaments were moved to other facilities in Missouri. League play for the rest of the summer and fall was cancelled. And for a few months, work crews were only able to access the facility by boat.

One year later…it is hard to believe that the park has officially been re-opened and fields are ready for summer play!! Some renovations are still under way, but the fields have been
re-done, a lot of power washing has taken place and crews have worked hard to get things clean and back in shape. This summer the city will host many prestige tournaments and league play was only delayed a few weeks. A big round of applause for the City of St. Joseph Parks & Recreation crews!!!

Check out the park…and some of the best ball players this summer!

St Joseph has 9 local museums that have kicked off a 2^nd Series trading card promotion. A collection of historical themed trading cards that showcase different exhibit items, famous people or hot spots that are unique to St. Joseph. Not only am I excited to have some fun collecting these cards, but it will get me back into some local attractions that I haven’t been in for awhile. I don’t plan to stop until I have all 9, I will post the cards as I collect them and give you tips on where you can as well collect them! Read to have some fun?!?!

Typically this isn’t a place I’d go to look around and hang out, but it was a beautiful day and I decided I’d rather be outside than inside while starting to collect the local trading cards. Many would consider it a creepy and unusual place to tour, including myself, until my adventure today. I learned a lot about our city’s rich history and found it pretty interesting to walk around the grounds and view the beautiful carved marble, granite and brick markers along with the aged landscaping.

Located at 824 Mount Mora Road is one of the oldest operating cemeteries, which includes 30 distinctive dwellings and the burial sites of many important people. Three Missouri Governors, many Civil War Vets, and a couple Pony Express riders are just a few to mention. Mount Mora Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Each gravestone tells a different story.

He was a school teacher, Circuit Clerk, employee, appointed Postmaster, then elected Howard County Probate Court Judge. In 1852, he arrived in Andrew County, in 1854, was elected to MO Senate; re-elected in 1858. He still remains the only Andrew County resident elected to US Senate. Robert’s influence played a major role in holding Missouri for the Union. He is buried at Mount Mora Cemetery.

Working as a Realtor(R) I find myself spending more time showing and listing homes than I do taking time to really value what my town has to offer!
