dallas tx: Relocating- First Hand Experience Part 14 - 01/22/09 05:26 AM
And the saga continues...  it's pretty obvious we're not closing in January, which was our original close date.  We're also not going to close early February which was our second date.  We're now looking at end of March, possibly April.
My husband was in Austin last week looking at the house.  He was so enraged about the "white" mortar that we paid to upgrade, that I went down last Friday to see for myself so we could figure out what to do.  This is what they call "white" in Austin.
Does that look like white to you?
Below, is "white" in Dallas … (9 comments)

dallas tx: Dallas Hotel Implodes with Video - 11/10/08 02:02 AM
The Holiday Inn Select off 75 Central Expressway in Dallas TX saw it's last moment at 7:59am Sunday morning.  At 8am on the dot, the building imploded.
Up until 7am, people were allowed at the site in order to get a good view of the implotion.  Hundreds of people showed up to watch this building come down.  The highway was closed for a while in order to allow the dust to clear.
What will go in its place?  An 83 acre development of luxury condos, townhomes, senior living and medical offices.  All this is expected to be completed fairly quickly, by December 2009.

dallas tx: I Didn't Know Earthquakes Happened in Dallas - 10/31/08 02:32 AM
Did you know that Texas gets earthquakes?  I've been here more than 24 years, and I don't ever recall hearing anything about earthquakes.  Maybe it's because they don't strike North Texas... until last night!  Last night, around 11:30pm and again after midnight until 3am, there were several earthquakes at the Irving and Grand Prairie border.  The largest ones coming in at 2.6 and 3.0 on the ricter scale.
These are the very first earthquakes to ever be reported in the DFW area.  In the past, there have been other earthquakes that happened elsewhere that were felt in parts of Ft Worth … (3 comments)

dallas tx: The State Fair of Texas Opened this Weekend - 09/29/08 03:44 AM
The State Fair of Texas opened this weekend and will run until October 19th.  It's always a lot of fun at the fair as there are so many things to do, for all ages.  Best of all, you can eat anything fried that you thought was imaginable.  This year's winning food was chicken friend bacon.  They say it's bacon that has been dipped in flour and batter a couple of times, and then deep fried and tastes just like chicken fried steak.  A little to fried if you ask me.
Do you like fried pickles? Fried coke? Fried mac ‘n cheese? … (4 comments)

dallas tx: What Are You Selling? - 08/22/08 04:45 AM
Do you think about what you're trying to sell when you take pictures of the house you have listed?  I always think, "Does this picture convey what a buyer is interested in?"
What is this agent or seller trying to sell?  Are you selling this treadmill?  Does it work?  How old it is?  Did you try to sell it on Craigslist and it didn't sell so you thought you would include it in the sale of the home?
Oh, I know, you're trying to sell that lamp.  It looks like it should be in an antique shop.  How old is that thing?  Does it … (61 comments)

dallas tx: Relocating- First Hand Experience Part 2 - 08/18/08 06:11 AM
It turns out that I'm a little spoiled being in the Dallas market verse moving to a smaller market, Austin.  In Dallas, we have a showing service called Centralized Showing Services (CSS).  I would guess 99% of agents use this service. It's very inexpensive, and it's wonderful.
When I need to show 10 properties, I get to call one number and give them all the addresses and times.  The showing service then turns around and calls the sellers to confirm the appts.  The showing service is the keeper of the alarm codes, passwords in case the alarm goes off, and gate … (22 comments)

dallas tx: Does Your Area Have "Good Neighbor" Fences? - 07/30/08 03:39 AM
Since we've been contemplating the move to Austin, it's given me an opportunity to see how other parts of the state, possibly even the country, do things.  One of those things is the Fence around a property.  This might not seem like a big deal, but in all actuality it is a fairly big deal as it's an aesthic thing...
Look at this picture.  What do you see?  I see a confused fence that doesn't quite know which way it was supposed to be put up.  Are the "climbing bars" supposed to be facing in the backyard, or facing the other way?  … (26 comments)

dallas tx: Dallas Metroplex has 10 Cities in Top 100 Best Places - 07/22/08 02:50 AM
Many suburbs of Dallas, TX made CNN Money's top 100 places to live list for 2008.  What I find interesting is that 10 cities in the Dallas area made the list, but only 1 city from the Austin area made the list, Round Rock.  Of those 10 cities, I have to admit, I'm shocked by a couple of the cities that made it, but as to not offend anyone, I will not mention which ones are unbelievable.
This is interesting because Austin is constantly and consistently on the list of one of the best places to live.  They're supposed to have a great housing … (6 comments)

dallas tx: Dallas TX is Building Green - 07/15/08 07:46 AM

The City of Dallas has been going Green through many initiatives.  The most important is that Dallas, TX now has new building standards and they are Green, and we're talking both commercial and residential buildings.
"Dallas is the number one municipal purchaser of renewable power in the nation, boasts the largest clean vehicle fleet of any city in Texas, and is the only pilot city chosen for the EPA's Sustainable Skylines Initiative aimed at improving air quality."
You can't get much Greener than that these days, though there are still improvements to be made. If you would like further information … (6 comments)

dallas tx: FREE VIN Etching Organized by City of Richardson - 07/15/08 03:24 AM
The City of Richardson is having a VIN Etching event on Thursday, September 18.  It will be held in the Cisco Systems parking lot (near Renner and Jupiter) from 9am until 2pm.  Did I mention this is FREE!!  The only thing the city is asking for is for each person to bring 2 canned goods.
The City of Richardson breaks records each and every year for their different canned food drives, and this will be no exception to add to those records.  Most dealerships would charged hundreds of dollars to etch your VIN in each and every window, but FREE is a great price.  … (2 comments)

dallas tx: A Mid-Day Escape - 07/09/08 12:44 AM
My husband and I used to spend time together in the middle of the day at the lake a few times a month.  We like to wakeboard.  We would each get some work done first thing in the morning, grab some lunch, and then off to the lake for a couple of hours.  We would always be back with a couple of hours left in the day to do any end of the day follow up.  So, we would never be unavailable for an entire day, or even several hours.  It is literally only a couple of hours, and I would … (5 comments)

dallas tx: Dallas verse Austin Update - 06/25/08 02:36 PM
As of today, it looks like we're probably going to stay in Dallas.  We have been running the numbers constantly, nonstop for the past few weeks.  Mike and I have talked more in the past few weeks than we've talked in our 5+ relationship... well, not really, but pretty darn close to it.
We've even found a house in Austin we've put an offer on.  We had decided on Falconhead West. The house will be complete in October time frame...
After running numbers, even though the cost of living calculators show Austin is less expensive than Dallas, it's really not.  To … (22 comments)

dallas tx: National verse Local Opinions - 06/12/08 07:22 AM
I couldn't believe my ears.  Barbara Corcoran, The Today Show real estate expert, is talking in general terms again and it is so frustrating.  She went on "national" tv and told people they needed to list their homes at 10-15% below their values in order to sell the homes fast.  WHAT?!!
If you take the Dallas average of about $185k, that's like listing the house at $157k.  Do you really think the person in this price range has that type of equity in their home to be able to sell it for at that price?  Probably over 95% of buyers would … (70 comments)

dallas tx: Austin vs Dallas- I need Honest Opinions - 05/18/08 01:36 AM
It looks as though I might "have to" relocate to Austin.  It a really bad time for me because my business is BOOMING, but my husband might be told that he has an option of being laid off or move to Austin.  He's from Austin (well, lived there from when he was 8 years old), but has been in Dallas for 10 years.  He doesn't understand how much Austin has changed and thinks it's the same 'ol small town, though he voices his frustration of the growth each time we go to visit his family.
I am looking for opinions from … (19 comments)
