egypt: Cairo, Egypt ~ The Grand Bazaar ~ The Happy Wanderers 2010 - 03/28/12 02:13 PM
In 2010, Geno and our traveling buddies visited Cairo and made it to the Old Grand Bazaar (Khan el-Khalili).  They are noted for selling clothing, cloth, spices, souvenirs and traditional jewelry and perfumes at reasonable prices.  The experience is quite something with all the sights, sounds of music and smells.  The Arabic coffee houses, restaurants and street food vendors are tightly packed throughout the market.
Our guide made sure we experienced the local fare at a lovely local restaurant on the way to the Alabaster Mosque. We couldn't leave without visiting the Alabaster Mosque or better known as The Mosque of … (8 comments)

egypt: The Wanderers in Saqqara, Egypt ~ 2010 - 03/22/12 04:28 AM
In 2010 we traveled with our traveling buddies, Gene’s brother and wife to Egypt. It was on our bucket list and I’m happy to say we went when we did as we would not be making that trek now.
One of our memorable stops was Saqqara which is a very vast and ancient burial site. Saqqara features numerous pyramids, including the world famous Step pyramid of Djoser sometimes called the Step Tomb due to its rectangular base.
We made our way through winding tunnels and narrow passages sometimes crawling so not to miss a thing! Catch a glimpse of … (13 comments)

egypt: Thankful Thursday ~ Half A World Away ~ The Giza Plateau - 03/08/12 03:57 AM
Now that we are getting our slide shows down we are able to resurrect photos from previous travels and assemble some continuity to our adventures!
In August of 2010 we were able to make safe passage to Egypt, Jordan and Israel.  Six months later we would not have ventured on this trip.  The temperature soared as high as 122 degrees!  Unfortunately for us this was the only time the four of us could get away...that's okay... the adventure was worth every drop of sweat!
....More to come!

egypt: A Sand Dune Away ~ Mena House Oberoi - 03/05/12 04:16 AM
In 2010 we made a trip to Egypt, Jordan and Israel (good thing we traveled when we did).  After touring the Pyramids in 122 degrees we chilled at lunch enjoying the ambiance of one of the most unique hotels in Cairo, the Mena House Oberoi. This palatial hotel is surrounded by lushly landscaped gardens and is just a sand dune away from the Great Pyramids of Giza.
Mena House is rich in history, playing host to kings and emperors, heads of state and celebrities.  The opulent interior is reflected in its lavish interior embellished with exquisite antiques, handcrafted furniture, original … (14 comments)

egypt: (Not So) Worldess Wednesday ~ Mena House ~ Jasmine Scented Gardens - 09/08/10 07:05 AM

While traveling in Egypt our guide suggested we stop at Mena House for lunch.  The Mena House Oberoi is set in 40 acres of jasmine-scented gardens with the  Pyramids towering above.  It was originally a royal lodge used by Khedive Ismail, the King of Egypt, as a house for himself and his guests while on hunting trips in the desert of during visits to the Pyramids of Giza.
With the opening of the Suez Canal, he enlarged the guesthouse to receive international and royal guests visiting the Pyramids.  Empress Eugenie was one of them as was Albert, Prince of Wales.

egypt: Just a Glimpse of An Adventure in Egypt, Jordan and Israel - 09/07/10 06:45 AM
It's been a crazy week since we returned from our exciting three week adventure through Egypt,  Jordan and Israel. This was a trip we planned last year but due to travel alerts were forced to cancel.  This year we slid in under the radar and are so glad we made the decision to go!!
We have for the past 6 years traveled with Gene's brother and wife...our traveling cronies.  What a spectacular time we had meeting people and immersing ourselves in their culture and food. We rode camels, rode in horse drawn carriages and rode mules!
Here is a glimpse of … (11 comments)

egypt: (Not So) Wordless Wednesday ~ Horus and Hathor in the Temple of Edfu - 09/01/10 03:30 PM
While we were traveling down the Nile River our ship stopped on the west bank of the Nile in the city of Edfu which was known in Greco-Roman times as Apollonopolis Magna, after the chief god Horus-Apollo. Construction of the temple began Aug.23, 237 BC.
The Dendera temple was dedicated to Horus and Hathor of Dendera (his wife). It is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak (which we also saw) and is one of the best preserved.  This is a photo of Horus and Hathor at the entrance to the courtyard.
Each year Hathor would travel from her Temple Denderah … (8 comments)

egypt: Thankful Thursday ~ I'm Thankful For Smiles - 08/26/10 12:07 PM
While traveling in Egypt we encountered many smiles. What is expressed in your eyes sometimes is all the communication you need to understand each other!
When getting on the camels we rode, the camel herder smiled and pointed to Gene's green safari hat (it matched the herder's long robe).  He continued to smile and went over to his booth selling Kufiyas and got a black & white one and brought it to Gene and pointed to it and then to Gene's hat!
Gene took off the hat and put on the Kufiya and placed his green safari hat on the herder. … (14 comments)

egypt: (not so) Wordless Wednesday - 08/25/10 06:29 PM
On our trip in Egypt we discovered a wonderfully refreshing drink...lemonade!  Not what I would normally expect when ordering lemonade!  Their version is using fresh limes and adding fresh mint topped with a slice of lime.  It's a gorgeous looking drink and as good as it looks!
We were adventuresome in trying their native foods and found them very enjoyable (okay, most of the dishes).

egypt: (not so) Wordless Wednesday - 08/25/10 06:05 PM
Just a few weeks ago while touring Egypt we were having fun riding camels by the pyramids in Egypt!  As Michael, from Michael's View says: "Time flies when you are having fun!"  These pictures are probably pretty self-explanatory, but, I want you to know this was really exciting!  Camels are smelly but amazingly agile!
