nature: Taking In The Sun At Day's End - 06/02/23 07:52 PM
Dandelions are considered a weed by many.
Honeybees depend on their nectar and pollen in early spring
before other flowers have bloomed.
I enjoy their offerings.
A poem found on the internet.

nature: Where Are They? - 08/13/22 08:41 PM
Where are the Cicadas?
Where are the Katydids?

It’s mid August here in southeastern Pennsylvania and not a peep from a daytime cicada, nor the harmonies from the nighttime katydids.
We just had a 10 day heatwave, that didn’t even pull them out.
They are the lovers of hot weather.
They are the chorus to help us through.
They are the sound, the music of the dog days of summer.
Where are they?
I miss them.

nature: My Love of Nature...Thanks To My Father - 11/12/18 03:38 PM
It is because of my father that I love and appreciate nature.

I remember at an early age going for rides to Valley Forge Park with my dad and being let out of the car with a few of my siblings and just running, running, running down hills and in the woods and sledding down snow banks in winter, and walking in the woods while leaves were falling. These outings were usually done without my mother, she was home cooking for our large family. My dad was getting us out and spending quality time with us since he had limited time to … (20 comments)

nature: When Natural Enemies Know No Boundaries - 11/18/10 12:16 PM
Just had to share this video "Unlikely Friends".
Seems to me, a form of compassion and no external peer pressure to hate and kill came into play in this unlikely relationship.                 (Gloria)

nature: There's A Chill In The Air in Delaware County PA - Falls A Comin' - 08/24/10 04:28 PM
Today was a really cool day here in South Eastern Pennsylvania. Only in the 70's.  A really nice change from this record breaking high temp summer.
There is a feel of autumn in the air.  Leaves are dry, some are even changing color.  The cicadas are silent.  Crickets rule.  An autumn sound.
Whenever this transition starts, that Hall and Oats song always comes into my mind.....

nature: The Power Went Out Today... - 08/22/10 02:45 PM
The Power Went Out Today...(Initially hand written as I sat in my home office with no electricity at 5pm)The power went off during a thunderstorm a little while ago.  My sister called me on my cell to tell me she heard there were tornado warnings in our neck of the woods (which is not common). We did an Open House from 1-3 pm and there is some follow up work I wanted to do since we met some potential clients at this Open, and there is other real estate related emails that need to be sent...But now the power is off...I can't … (4 comments)

Perseid Meteor Shower At Its Peak Tonight and Tomorrow Night August 12th and 13th, 2010Treat yourself to a meteor shower if your skies are clear tonight or tomorrow evening.  There is nothing like seeing a "falling star" let alone many in a short period of time.  Get away from city lights if possible, be patient, give it time, read more in the links provided.  And make those many wishes with each passing meteor.                    (written by Gloria)

nature: Giant Mushrooms In Delaware County PA - 07/20/10 03:19 PM

As I was driving along yesterday I noticed something white up ahead on the freshly mowed grass in  Chester Park.  At first I thought they were baseballs, which would not be out of order since it is a park that is heavily used by many people.  But as I got closer I realized they were not man made but something organic.  I had to take a closer look.  They were giant mushrooms that were growing on the side of the road.  I wondered if they were edible?  Probably not.    (Written by Gloria)

nature: Food Right Outside The Door - 07/16/10 08:08 AM
Happened to see this very active wasp nest in a pear tree during a showing earlier this week.  The weather has been so hot for so long here in South Eastern PA that the wasp season is off to an early start it seems.  Pears were already on the ground with wasps feasting.  Usually this happens in August.

nature: Grapes and Patience - 06/01/10 05:12 AM
Grapes and PatienceTwo summers ago we planted three grape plants that were 8 inches tall, one concord grape plant and two seedless plants, a white grape and a dark grape. Two plants have survived two winters and this is the year of the first grapes! Neither of us have been stewards to grape plants and we are enjoying the process. It is amazing how much these plants can grow in one season. Doug built fences for them to grow on and they are going wild. After this season we will need to research how to care for them in the long … (7 comments)

nature: Stink Bugs - 05/31/10 04:52 PM
Stink Bugs
For the past few evenings I have been visited by a Stink Bug as it flies around the lamp over my computer. It hangs out on some papers near by, walks a little, then flies again. So I Googled them and what I found out was interesting to me. Apparently they seem to have arrived in South Eastern Pennsylvania in 1998 from Japan and China.  Allentown seems to be the place where they entered Pennsylvania.
I have never killed one so I do not know the smell they give off that renders their name. All I know is that … (5 comments)
