Its time to train the coaches.  Football is coming and our young Pop Warner athletes will be hitting the fields in the next couple of weeks.  Some come with trepidation, can they really do it?  Others come with great anticipation ... they've been waiting for the first day of practice since they walked off the field of their last game last season.  They will soon be blended in to a wonderful team of Douglas Tigers.
 We spend a lot of time getting our coaches ready for the season.  The success of the season is directly attributable to the coaching staff.  Success … (1 comments)

My wife got me a rescue goat as I've posted before.  Buster was left in a home that was foreclosed on, our friend rescued him, and we took him in.  We took him blind, hadn't seen or learned much about him before we agreed to take him.  What a treasure we found!  The family that left him must have been sad as he is very people friendly and dependent - was clearly loved.

carson valley acerage: The Ethereal Feeling Created By A Thunderstorm - 06/17/09 09:32 PM

This was taken from our office window a couple of weeks ago.  The feeling was quite ethereal as we got ready for the violence of the storm.  It rained, and cleared up, of course.  These moments remind us of the power and beauty of Mother Nature.  Look around the clouds - they are really three dimensional.  The mountain, Jobs Peak, is about 8-9 miles away - this is a very big set of clouds.

It's time to burn! 
Throughout our Valley you can see smoke this time of year, but don't fret!  It is that time of year when the farmers burn the weeds that congest their irrigation ditches. 
Water is a precious thing, the life blood of the crops that keep the Valley green.  These days it is mostly the color of chlorophyll, but our historical reason for being was the ability of the Valley to grow the feed for the oxen and horses that were used so heartily in the regional mining operations, i.e.- Virginia City, Bodie, etc., a vibrant agricultural economy.

Our lush Carson Valley was once home to twenty two dairies and the Minden Butter and Creamery. 
There is but one dairy left and we recently learned that they have sold most of their herd.  The economics just don't work with one dairy.  They don't have enough milk to make the truck pick up feasible twice a week and they don't have storage facilities to hold enough milk for a once a week pick up.  Economics dictate the closure of the milking operation.   
We hope they keep their heifer replacement operation going as we see that from our home and enjoy … (2 comments)
