August 29th, 2011 is the 1st day of school in Howard County, MD - or maybe not! - 08/28/11 09:40 PM
August 29th, 2011 is the beginning of the school year in Howard County, Maryland. At least, that was the plan. August 29th was the date every parent from Elkridge to Columbia, Ellicott City to Woodbine had circled in their planner and got reminded of by their phones. However, there will be no yellow buses to watch out for in the morning and the schools will be sans students!
If you are running around the house trying to find that new lunch-box, you can stop now. You don't need to worry about 1st day outfits and scrubbing behind the ears - … (6 comments)

Re-blog: Will You Pretty Please Bring In that Lawn Chair... PLEASE read the scale below! - 08/27/11 12:50 PM
I can only say it again PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS! Parts of Maryland are under a Hurricane Warning and other counties (Baltimore City/County, Howard County, Montgomery County) are under a Tropical Storm Warning. Tropical Storm winds can still cause extensive damage - it does not take 100 mph to blow your lawnchair, trashcan, potted plants around ... Unless you want your neighbor knocking on your door tomorrow to inform you that one of your belongings ended up in their living room, please do secure everything or bring it inside.
DO NOT TAKE IT LIGHTLY! A weakened Irene is good news but … (3 comments)

Hurricane Irene & Maryland: Gov. O'Malley declared state of Emergency - 08/25/11 06:55 PM
This afternoon Gov. Martin O'Malley has declared a STATE OF EMERGENCY in preparation for Hurricane Irene.
"Maryland must prepare for potential destruction and minimize the threat to public safety."
Ocean City, MD has now been ordered to evacuate - the last time this happened was in 1985
Annapolis and Baltimore City began handing out sandbags this afternoon... more info via Baltimore Sun
Maryland residents are being advised to stock up on supplies to last at least 72 hours

Maryland's Paradise - please be gentle this weekend Hurricane Irene! - 08/24/11 11:39 PM
During our recent trip to Ocean City, MD we took a day to get away from miles of hotels, tourist traps and the boardwalk and discovered Assateague Island, MD. I had heard a lot about it and couldn't wait to see it myself. It took all but 5 minutes for my family to declare that this is officially our favorite beach (we are totally qualifed to make the call, too). Maryland's portion of Assateague Island has got to be the closest place to paradise that Maryland has to offer!

Admission to the Assateague Island State Park (Beach) is … (12 comments)

Kindergarten memories: perfectionism, Saturday school, gigantic band-aids and a sugar cone - 08/22/11 09:59 PM
On August 29th, 2011 it is back to school in Central Maryland (Howard & Montgomery Counties). Just in time I have been invited to share my Kindergarten memories via a contest in the Active Rain community. I like to reminisce about my childhood, travels and such and dig out pictures and journals long forgotten about. So, here are my memories about my first school year: perfectionism, Saturday school, gigantic band-aids and a sugar cone!
Kindergarten, a very lovely German word by the way and so much nicer sounding than Sauerkraut and the totally über-used word über, is actually quite different in Germany. … (9 comments)

Benefits of the Central Maryland buyer’s market: Choices, choices, choices … But how do you make a decision? - 08/21/11 10:29 AM

One of the great benefits of the buyer’s market in Central Maryland is the number of homes you can choose from. However, that same benefit can also seem overwhelming when you first start out on your home-buying adventure and/or are relocating to the area. How do you narrow it down and break it into a more manageable market for you?*

Below are 10 steps that can help you get there and hopefully assist you in finding your dream home in Central Maryland:
1. $$$ Check your finances, credit, budget, and consult a lender to establish a price-range. Please … (6 comments)

Re-blog: Real Estate Recovery …………. Rent vs. Buying - 08/18/11 08:12 AM
I like sharing good news! This blog by George Souto is excellent news for current and future home owners, not so much for renters though. The Central Maryland rental market is definitely heating up: good properties are renting fast, multiple applications are becoming the rule and choices for single family homes below $2,000 are far and few between.
Via George Souto NMLS# 65149 FHA, CHFA, VA Mortgages Connecticut:
Lately the forecast for Real Estate Recovery has not been very optimistic.  But I believe that we in the Real Estate Industry need to try to find whatever silver lining there may be during … (4 comments)

A different kind of ocean in Ocean City, Maryland ... - 08/15/11 07:06 PM
Ocean City, MD is a favorite vacation-spot for many Marylanders. If you are fortunate to be cruising along you can make it from B-More/Wash DC, across the Bay Bridge and to the Eastern Shore within 3 to 4 hours.
We decided to head to Ocean City, MD last minute to celebrate my daughter's 6th birthday this Thursday some place special... However, arriving in torrential rains it was a different kind of Ocean in which we got our feet wet:

DIARY OF A REALTOR®: WHY I CHOSE REAL ESTATE - A JOURNEY HALF-WAY AROUND THE WORLD - 08/13/11 01:22 AM
There was no pivotal moment in my life that made me choose Real Estate. It’s been a life-long journey which I have attempted to ‘summarize’ below … it’s on the long side, so you may just want to grab a glass of wine before you start reading!
I grew up in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) commonly referred to as just East Germany. That’s right I was born on the other side of the wall, behind the “Iron Curtain”, Russian was more important than English and Mickey Mouse a symbol of the enemy … Being a Realtor® is my American Dream!

PCS to Maryland: Where can you find answers to all your VA loan questions? - 08/11/11 09:09 AM
VA loans are, without doubt, one of the great benefits of military service. In order to make an informed decision whether or not the VA is the way to go at this point in your life, you need to educate yourself before you jump into the process. By listing a few resources below, I’m hopeful I can save you some time and point you in the right direction early on.

IN MEMORIAM OF UNCOMMON VALOR - 08/09/11 09:15 AM
IN MEMORIAM OF UNCOMMON VALOR
The U.S. Navy is a small family .. this hit close to home. The SEAL mentality is such that silently and willingly they go into harms way, few words spoken, mission & country first. Thank you NAVY SEALS, Soldiers, Airmen and Afghan Commandos who gave their lives in support of the greater good.
Thank you mothers and fathers, wives, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers ... my heart goes out to you. If only I could take some of your pain away....

Community Spotlight: Historic Relay in Halethorpe, MD - 08/07/11 06:22 PM
Historic Relay is a Baltimore County, MD neighborhood, situated right across the county line from Howard off of Route 1. It is nestled in between the 895, 195 and 95.
Granted, nestled may seem like an odd word choice but once you visit the neighborhood you will know what I mean. It’s a secluded area boasting its “own” entrance (by proximity) to Patapsco Valley State Park – as a matter of fact you’ll see residents riding their bikes to the park quite often. Its closeness to major routes is an asset, not a draw-back, making it a convenient location for anyone … (14 comments)
