Angels 13, Red Sox 10 (Arcadia Minors)
Before I get to tonight's game, I'd be remiss if I didn't write a little something about Saturday morning's game between the Angels and Cardinals, won 8-3 by our beloved Angels.
For those of you wondering why I didn't get my usual posting up promptly after the game Saturday, it was really from writers block as I couldn't find the proper words to adequately describe the stellar job the officiating crew did that morning.  You see, Tim McCartin and I were pressed into emergency duty to ump the game when our regularly scheduled man in blue failed to … (1 comments)

Berridge Nurseries celebrates 70 years in Arcadia - 04/23/08 05:17 PM
I nearly let it slip through the cracks that Berridge Nurseries at 4647 E Camelback Rd is celebrating 70 years of business in the area.  Kudos to them!  Arcadia's charm is in the multi-generational families living and working in the area, so it's great to see the family-owned success stories.  My wife and I have bought many plants and landscaping supplies at Berridge over the years and they've always been a pleasure to do business with.
I enjoy networking with all of the local merchants in the area.  If you know someone who deserves some recognition, I'd love to write about them … (0 comments)

City rules that Valley Vista Road to remain a public treasure. - 04/23/08 05:07 PM
The public's concerns took precedent in Round 1 vs. the residents living on Valle Vista Road.  The scenic road running between Arcadia Dr and 56th St on the south side of Camelback Mountain was the center of controversy lately as homeowners sought to gate both ends and take the road private.  In a hearing today, the City of Phoenix decided that the road was a scenic treasure and an important link for pedestrians between neighborhoods on either side and denied the homeowners petition for abandonment.
I wrote in my blog yesterday that while I certainly saw both arguments, and think today's decision … (0 comments)

Should Valle Vista Road be saved for the Residents or the Public? - 04/22/08 08:09 PM
If you live in the Arcadia area, or on the southern slope of Camelback Mountain, you've no doubt have heard the controversy brewing as residents of the highest road in the Valley seek to block the public from sharing their views.  Homeowners pearched on Valle Vista Road are taking their case to City of Phoenix's Development Services Department in a hearing on Wednesday, April 23rd at 10:00 am at Phoenix City Hall.  If they are successful in aguing their case, the will have the right to buy the abondoned right-of-way from the City, put up gates on both ends at 50th St & 56th … (0 comments)

Angels 13, Dodgers 8 (Arcadia Minors)
The Angels kicked off the second half of the season in dominating fashion as they grabbed control of the Dodgers early and never looked back.  Ian Kitts sent the fist pitch of the game to the fence for a stand-up double, followed by a single from Max Siegel.  Grady Ottomeyer followed with a two RBI double to kick-off a monster night that ended with two doubles, a single, 6 RBI's, 3 stolen bases and 2 runs scored.  Brandon Rosvall got into the action with a double of his own and 2 stolen bases, including stealing home on a … (0 comments)

Angels 5, A's 5 (Arcadia Minors)
We've reached the halfway point in the season so it's only fitting that yesterday's game should end in a tie.  I am so proud of these kids and how much they've improved their level of play.  Solid at bats, great baserunning, and good pitching is keeping them in every game.
Saturday's morning game at ANLC was no different.  Grady Ottomeyer pitched a strong inning and a 1/3 to rack up 4 strikeouts while giving up just one run.  In the bottom of the first, the Angels offense came to life.  Max Siegel walked, followed by a single by Ottomeyer which … (0 comments)

Arcadia High School Closure Proposal - 04/17/08 11:41 PM
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE HOPI PTO:IF YOU THINK CLOSING A SCHOOL IN ANOTHER COMPLEX DOESN'T AFFECT YOUR CHILD... THINK AGAIN .... AND  ATTEND APRIL 22nd SUSD FORUMThe SUSD administration, after weeks of working with a Blue Ribbon Committee comprised of parents, administrators and teachers, made 5 proposals to the Governing Board to re-balance enrollment and facility usage in our district. While no changes have been proposed in the Arcadia Complex (except by Molly Holzer, SUSD school board member -- see below and attached article), we must recognize that every dollar we save through consolidation and efficiencies in one of our district … (0 comments)

Phillies 7, Angels 3 (Arcadia Minors)
In what perhaps could be a preview of the League Championship Game, the Phillies rallied to defeat the Angels 7-3 Monday night at ANLC, riding the arms of their deep pitching staff.
After going a quick 3 up, 3 down to start the 1st, the Angels sent Grady Ottomeyer to the mound who gave up a single, double and a run before settling down to strikeout the side.  The Angels fought back in the 2nd with a lead-off base hit by Parker Walton and double by Matthew McCartin.  Nick Dorrell then came up huge with a 2 RBI … (1 comments)

Angels 11, Marlins 6 (Arcadia Minors)
The Angels improved to 4-2 on the season with a convincing win over the Marlins Saturday morning at ANLC.  Beau Kelly led off the game with a base hit, solen base and a run on Tanner Semple's bases-loaded walk.  Matthew McCartin and Brandon Rosvall also walked in the inning with Matthew picking up a stolen base as well.  In the bottom half of the first, McCartin ran into a little trouble on the mound.  With the help of some missed calls on the base paths, the Marlins scored three runs before Matthew eventually struck out the side.
The Angels came right back in … (0 comments)

Arcadia's Local Hangouts - 04/12/08 12:08 AM
I took the family to Arcadia's most famous establishment this evening for dinner...the Tee Pee Mexican Restaurant.  (http://www.teepeemexicanfood.com/) The wait was the usual 30 or so minutes and the food was excellent as always.  There was a large contingency of St. Mary's families in the waiting room and "Dawg Pound" outside, so my wife and her mom, both St. Mary's grads, had plenty of conversation to quickly pass the time.
At one point in the conversation the idea came up as to what other "home grown" Arcadia hangouts had achieved such legendary status in the community?  With a little thought, we came up … (0 comments)

Is Real Estate in Arcadia Too Expensive? - 04/10/08 10:27 PM
Hi Friends,
The following is a great article written by one fo my friends, Terry Forsberg.  It's too good not to pass along.  Just think about how this applies to homes in Arcadia and elsewhere in the Valley.  As a wise man once said, "Is it too expensive, or can you just not afford it?"  The point is that the economy, and all of the markets within, are cyclical - and they will all expand with time.  I say don't fear the future - invest in it.
Enjoy...

Rockies 7, Angels 4 (Arcadia Minors)
The Rockies topped the Angels on a blustery early evening game at ANLC.  The Rockies got ahead of Max Siegel early picking up 2 of their 7 runs in the first two innings of play.  The Angels fought back in the first with Max getting a single and stolen base, followed by Grady Ottomeyer'ssingle which advanced Siegel to third.  Parker Walton, batting 4th, then drove in Max with a fielder's choice RBI.
That was all the runs that the Angels could score until the 3rd when Henry Florancesingled to start a rally that would put the Angels into the lead.  Henry quickly stole 2nd and … (0 comments)

Arcadia Real Estate Market Data for March 2008 - 04/07/08 04:40 PM

Sales picked up the pace a bit in Arcadia (Area 405) in March with 5 properties SOLD and 4 more PENDING.  This was better than the 2 SOLD in February.  Paradise Valley (AREA 404) sales remained robust with 42 SOLD and 59 PENDING.
The lower price points in South Scottsdale and South Arcadia continue to sell more quickly and at closer to asking prices.  I have been working with first-time home buyers in the under $200,000 range in these areas and we're finding many of these properties are getting contracts at or near asking price.

ARCADIA BLOCK WATCH ALERT - 04/07/08 04:06 PM
This is a post from Arcadia resident Lynn Blake:
COSTCO MUGGINGOn Wednesday February 28th, a friend of mine was mugged at Costco (44th and Thomas) while unloading groceries into her car.  It was 1 P.M. and she was parked a couple of spots away from the door of the store.  A minivan drove down the aisle the wrong way and a woman hopped out of the passenger seat (a skinny white woman, wearing big black sunglasses, with very long straight blond hair that could have been a wig) and grabbed my friend's purse which was hanging on the strap at her shoulder. … (0 comments)

The Rosvall Family of Arcadia was notified today that their son, Brandon, has been selected to be featured in the 2009 Make-A-Wish calendar, Wish Kids: Where Are They Now?
Kathryn Roethel, of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, contacted the Rosvall's today with the surprising news.  Wrote Kathryn, "I'm very excited to tell you that, out of more than 60 nominations, we have selected [Brandon] to be featured as one of the 12 calendar kids!  Our designers haven't yet decided which month will feature [Brandon], but we loved your photos and were moved by your story!"

Angels 5, Cubs 2 (Arcadia Minors)
On a beautiful evening at ANLC, the Angels got back to their winning ways behind stellar pitching.  In the early game, Grady Ottomeyer pitched 1 1/3 innings striking out 4, leaving the game due to pitch count with Cubs camped at each base.  Beau Kellycame on to finish out the 2nd with 2 strikeouts, but giving up 2 runs charged to Ottomeyer in the process.  These were the only runs that the Cubs would scrape together.  Brandon Rosvall pitched the next 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, with Matthew McCartin coming in with 2 outs in … (0 comments)

Arcadia Little League Results - 04/01/08 12:40 AM
Diamondbacks 6, Angels 3 (Arcadia Minors)
Sometimes it's harder to be a parent than a player.  Tonight was one of those nights.  The Angels lost in heartbreak fashion late in the game after scraping together an earlier 3-1 lead.  Beau Kelly used his good eye and speed to grab two stolen bases and two runs scored after walking in both of his appearances at the plate.  Matthew McCartin paced the offense with two hits, and RBI and a stolen base.  The big hit of the night was from Max Siegel with an RBI triple in the 3rd inning and added a walk and run scored.  Nicholas Dorrell had … (1 comments)
