google: SEO 101 : IS IT RIGHT? (part 2) - 03/27/10 03:46 PM
In my last post in this series (TAGS'n'STUFF), I talked about three of the most import parts of a web page: the title, description, and page link. By going to Google's home page and typing in site:www.[your site name].com (or whatever), you can see what Google has in it's database relating to your site.
One of the interesting things to do is check each page on your site against Google's index. So, if you have a page on your site called www.[your site name].com/realestate.html, and the purpose of that page is to show off your real estate stuff, then what you … (7 comments)

google: SEO 101 : TAGS 'n' STUFF (part 1) - 03/18/10 12:14 PM
I've always argued that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is part art, part science and part black magic. Certainly, the "black magic" part applies at times, especially when it comes to Google who keep their algorithms close to their chests.
Yet there are some basic things you, as a website owner, can do to help yourself get in and stay in the search engines.
What's that? You're already in the search engines? Cool!
Are you sure? It doesn't hurt to check. Don't assume that just because you've got a site that any of the search engines know about it. A quick … (12 comments)

google: THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM... - 06/05/09 09:17 AM
A little while ago I wrote an article about getting to the top of Google and other search engines (see SO YOU MADE IT TO THE TOP OF GOOGLE). In the article I pointed out that getting to the top slot isn't necessarily the "be all and end all"; you have to convert those visitors into transactions.
On the web, this is generally done over time by cultivating the relationship. While there are cases when a visitor to a site contacts the site owner immediately, more often than not, there is a "wait and see" approach. That's one of the … (2 comments)

google: SEARCH ENGINES DO IT WITH SPIDERS - 05/17/09 01:34 PM
At least the good ones do. There's always a lot of talk online and offline about "how do I get to #1 in (insert search engine here, mostly Google)?". The answer is much along the lines of the famous New York quip "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"..."With practice".
Search engines vary in the exact "how". At companies like Google, their search algorithms are pretty KFC-secret-recipe-for-your-eyes-only guarded secrets. Yet there are some conventionally-accepted "norms" that apply to Google and most others.
The term "spidering" or "crawling" is as old as the "web". If you image the Internet, of even … (1 comments)

google: So...you made it to the top of Google... - 04/29/09 07:19 PM
So, you're number 1 in Google, maybe even MSN and Yahoo and yet...business isn't booming. Maybe it's the email...nope, that's working. Phones? Just got a call so it can't be that.
But didn't they promise?????
In the mad dash to get to the number 1 spot in the major search engines, followed by an epic struggle to stay there, many people, especially smaller companies, self-employed individuals, and REALTORS have spent vast sums of money without a clear idea about the objective.
Traffic does not equal business. There are those who might disagree, but taking a shotgun approach to business isn't … (13 comments)
