seo: THE MOST DANGEROUS SEARCH TERMS ON THE WEB - 06/20/11 12:02 PM
The top 10 most dangerous internet search terms (The Telegraph) The above is a link to very interesting article from the UK Telegraph newspaper regarding some of the “most dangerous” words that can get web surfers into trouble. By “trouble”, they mean ending up on websites where there's a very good chance that something nasty, better known as “malware” might end up being downloaded onto the visitor's PC. The list that they provide is a little UK-centric, but there's a link to a McAfee (here it is – it's a PDF file) study from 2008 which shows the most dangerous

seo: WITH WEB DESIGNERS YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR - 07/18/10 12:55 PM
10 Things To Do Before Employing A New Web Designer As a small business web designer, I have a vested interest in providing quality of service and product to my clients. Referrals account for 90 percent of my business and, as much as we'd like to thing the Internet is a big place, the world is a small one and word gets out. When I first speak to a potential client, I offer some advice, including a piece that might sound counterproductive. I tell them to speak to at least two more designers. When they ask why I tell them “because

seo: A CHEAP MAKEOVER, SPRING CLEAN, CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL, YOUR WEBSITE MIGHT NEED IT - 04/02/10 09:41 AM
Especially in the current economic climate not everyone can afford to dramatically update their website every year or two. This is true especially for those of us who are self-employed or small business owners. Several of my most recent clients have been very honest. "We just don't have the money to do what we'd like," said one," what can you do to help?" Now granted, I'm in the web design business, so there may be more that I can do than our clients, and we do. In the aforementioned case, I did some cleaning up of the page content, streamlined tags

seo: SEO 101 : IS IT RIGHT? (part 2) - 03/27/10 03:46 PM
In my last post in this series (TAGS'n'STUFF), I talked about three of the most import parts of a web page: the title, description, and page link. By going to Google's home page and typing in site:www.[your site name].com (or whatever), you can see what Google has in it's database relating to your site. One of the interesting things to do is check each page on your site against Google's index. So, if you have a page on your site called www.[your site name].com/realestate.html, and the purpose of that page is to show off your real estate stuff, then what you

seo: SEO 101 : TAGS 'n' STUFF (part 1) - 03/18/10 12:14 PM
I've always argued that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is part art, part science and part black magic. Certainly, the "black magic" part applies at times, especially when it comes to Google who keep their algorithms close to their chests. Yet there are some basic things you, as a website owner, can do to help yourself get in and stay in the search engines. What's that? You're already in the search engines? Cool! Are you sure? It doesn't hurt to check. Don't assume that just because you've got a site that any of the search engines know about it. A quick

seo: THE EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM... - 06/05/09 09:17 AM
A little while ago I wrote an article about getting to the top of Google and other search engines (see SO YOU MADE IT TO THE TOP OF GOOGLE). In the article I pointed out that getting to the top slot isn't necessarily the "be all and end all"; you have to convert those visitors into transactions. On the web, this is generally done over time by cultivating the relationship. While there are cases when a visitor to a site contacts the site owner immediately, more often than not, there is a "wait and see" approach. That's one of the

seo: SEARCH ENGINES DO IT WITH SPIDERS - 05/17/09 01:34 PM
At least the good ones do. There's always a lot of talk online and offline about "how do I get to #1 in (insert search engine here, mostly Google)?". The answer is much along the lines of the famous New York quip "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?"..."With practice". Search engines vary in the exact "how". At companies like Google, their search algorithms are pretty KFC-secret-recipe-for-your-eyes-only guarded secrets. Yet there are some conventionally-accepted "norms" that apply to Google and most others. The term "spidering" or "crawling" is as old as the "web". If you image the Internet, of even

seo: So...you made it to the top of Google... - 04/29/09 07:19 PM
So, you're number 1 in Google, maybe even MSN and Yahoo and yet...business isn't booming. Maybe it's the email...nope, that's working. Phones? Just got a call so it can't be that. But didn't they promise????? In the mad dash to get to the number 1 spot in the major search engines, followed by an epic struggle to stay there, many people, especially smaller companies, self-employed individuals, and REALTORS have spent vast sums of money without a clear idea about the objective. Traffic does not equal business. There are those who might disagree, but taking a shotgun approach to business isn't

seo: Twitter...and other things - 12/09/08 04:27 PM
Social networking is all the rage on the Internet these days. New tools and sites are springing up almost weekly. It will be a while before the "survival of the species" leaves the major players to dominate the field, but social networking tools are certainly worth looking at. Like blogging, using tools such as LinkedIn, ActiveRain, Twitter and others, can be a useful and free marketing tool. In the New Year I'll have a more in-depth article on these but if you're in the mood, you can follow us on Twitter by visiting http://twitter.com/dsegrove. We're also on ActiveRain, LinkedIn, WordPress and

seo: Low-Cost Website Marketing (edited) - 07/12/08 05:49 PM
I've been asked a lot questions along the lines of "how do I get more hits"...? Some tried and true methods... Tell people about your site. Put your site address in the signature of your emails. Sounds obvious, doesn't it? You'd be surprised how many people don't think about this. Be sure your site's on your business card and stationary. Use a domain name that can be remembered easily. Having a name like "thebestwebsiteforstuff.com" might sound cool but it's a bit of a mouthful. Also "stuff4u" may also sound neat, but people tend to type in web addresses the way they
