texting: EMAIL FAUX PAS, ETIQUETTE ET AL : 10 THINGS TO AVOID - 12/07/09 09:09 AM
Part 1 of 2
Email is so pervasive in our lives that many people, I'm sure, wouldn't know what to do with themselves if someone pulled the Internet plug. A few short years ago, email was considered an "unreliable" delivery mechanism, meaning that if you had something of importance to say or send, you'd better use a backup plan to be sure your recipient got it.
No more. Email is routinely subpoenaed in legal cases. It's considered in many courts to be as good as a written contract and there are several "contract" sites that rely on email for contract execution. … (4 comments)

texting: LETTER AND SYMBOLS AND NUMBERS - OH MY! - 05/15/09 08:40 AM

DAVE'S FRIDAY FEATURE
This is the third and final part of what has become an eagerly followed (yeah right!) mini-series I've nicknamed “WEBIQUETTE”. To end the week on a fun note, today I'm going to talk about alphabetical-to-numerical conversions.
Switching letters for numbers is as old as the pocket calculator. Remember when the cool thing was to type in a formula and then turn your calculator upside-down and read? You don't remember? Oh, you probably had a life...
In any case, switching numbers for letters evolved with the first pagers with displays. These things, the size of car batteries, could … (0 comments)

texting: lol - r u afk or zzz? - 05/08/09 08:33 AM
DAVE'S FRIDAY FEATURE
Last Friday I finished the week with an article on emoticons. I had some interesting feedback and, as promised, am following up with this Friday's feature: Web Abbreviations (or Webbreviations).
Whether you're texting, instant messaging, playing online games, or even emailing, from time-to-time you'll seen an abbreviation. Some, such as LOL (laughing out loud) are so commonplace as to merit entry in commercial dictionaries. In order to expand your web diction, below is a list of some of the more (or less) common abbreviations you might see out there.
Okay, now you're totally l33t and will be able to … (12 comments)

texting: What did he mean...? Emoticons 101 - 05/01/09 02:35 PM
DAVE'S FRIDAY FEATURE
Figured I'd end the week with something fun.
You seen them all over the place. If you text, email, play online games, post on blogs, or do anything using social media, you seen them. They're part of the everyday lexicon of web users. They add to a message what cannot always been perceived from the content itself: emotion.
Many people know some of the basic ones :) but not everyone knows most of the more commonly-used emoticons :(, so here's a quick primer that will help you take another step away from being a n00b ("noob" – a … (3 comments)

texting: Many a (true) word... - 12/17/08 06:37 PM
There's an old saying: "many a true word is said in jest". An email newsletter from a friend of mine got me thinking along similar lines this morning. In her newsletter, she mentioned that she'd typed it all up and then hit the wrong button, losing it all.
Now, granted, that's not quite the same as saying something, followed by an immediate "just kidding", but it does make me think of a saying that should be part of the everyday lexicon: "many a (true) word is sent by mistake".
Yes, I'm referring to the old "I didn't mean to send it...did … (16 comments)

texting: Blackberry and Texting Etiquette - 07/20/08 02:34 PM
An increasingly large number of my RE clients are getting Blackberrys (or is it Blackberries...) and other texting devices. After all, it's a tried-and-tested technology for those on the move. But speed and convenience seems to be leading to short replies that may be misinterpreted...
When your email is routed to your Blackberry and you want to reply, it's relatively straightforward: type and send. However,  the nature of the devices tends to mean that quick, one-liners are the norm. I often get these in reply, with a message footer "Sent from my Blackberry". I know that a short and often abrupt-seeming … (9 comments)
