twitter: GETTING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING BACK ON TRACK (PART 2) - 06/15/11 04:41 PM
Welcome back. In part 1 (here's the link), I talked about what social media is, and the importance of communication. People have tended to lose sight of the “social” in “social media”.

There are dozens of social media platforms out there. From micro-blogging sites such as twitter to connect-with-everyone-you-ever-knew sites such as Facebook to social bookmarking sites such as Digg or Reddit, there's something for everyone. Blog are also social media applications, as are message boards, chat rooms and even comment section of news, sports and other sites.

But back to you. Where is your time going to be … (1 comments)

twitter: GETTING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING BACK ON TRACK (PART 1) - 06/02/11 09:31 PM
Part of any worthwhile online marketing presence has got to include social media of some sort or another. Let's face it, it's not going away. Companies such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, Reddit, you name it, are being gobbled up or are IPO-ing like you wouldn't believe. They're also growing like you wouldn't believe either.

To many people, there's still confusion when it comes to how to integrate social media into your overall strategy. Last time I checked, there were still 24 hours in a day. Work has to be done and there's little enough time as it is. Adding … (4 comments)

twitter: THERE'S A REASON SOCIAL MEDIA ABBREVIATES TO S&M - 09/28/10 01:50 PM
The title of this post is only partially intended as tongue-in-cheek. When it comes to Social Media, and especially Social Media Marketing, the old saying "no pain, no gain" seriously applies.
Whether you pay someone to do your Social Media management or you do it yourself, there's going to be an investment, financial, time, resources, emotion, all of the above. I see many people out there "doing" Social Media, but treating it like a broadcast medium. It's like being in a very crowded room with everyone talking at once, but few, if anyone actually listening.
We tend to lose sight of … (3 comments)

twitter: ONLINE MARKETING IS A LABOR OF LOVE - 08/20/10 03:46 PM
This brief post came as a result of a conversation with a client. She was frustrated by the amount of work she was having to put into her online marketing, feeling that is was an effort with an uncertain reward...
...and of course it is! Last time I checked, there were no guarantees that just because you built a website it was going to be visited by the masses. No one promised that anyone was going read your blog, reply to a tweet or "like" you Facebook.
Whether you're online for pleasure or business (or both), nothing is certain. There … (0 comments)

twitter: EARNING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING S-T-R-I-P-E-S - 08/04/10 11:26 AM

Social Media.
It's all the rage. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace, YouTube, Digg, Reddit...not to mention all the little tools and utilities out there that we can use to update all of the above.
Where does the novice start?
STRATEGY : You need a plan. A plan starts with a goal. Without a goal, how do you know whether you're succeeding? A business goal will help you determine what social media tools will help you achieve it.
TIME :  Yep, the old enemy of humanity. The old saying “Rome wasn't built in a day” applies here too. Like anything worth savoring, from … (8 comments)

twitter: SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING? 10 THINGS TO CONSIDER... - 07/20/10 10:06 AM
The term "social media" has become so widely used (and abused) that the meaning behind it has become rather generic. But remember that the "social" in "social media" should be just that. It suggests interaction and communication...TWO way. There are many many many people out there standing on their little platform shouting out their message and never listening. While this might work for celebrities, in my opinion it's probably a dubious marketing strategy. If you're going to use social media, then use it the way it was intended.
Understand the terms and tools. Facebook is what I would consider true "social" … (5 comments)

twitter: SOCIAL MEDIA CZAR AND OVERNIGHT MILLIONAIRE - 08/07/09 08:36 PM
The cursor flashed. The screen was blank...
There I was, sitting at the keyboard. It was time to blog, then put the word out on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, Reddit etc etc. But I was stuck. “It was a dark and stormy night” sounded less cliché than anythign I could come up with.
Then it me...and I wrote. I wrote from the heart. I was an oracle, a prophet...I was Jerry McGuire...I wrote with passion, with love...and the words flowed...
One article and it happened. Someone on one of the press feeds got hold of my post and the next thing … (2 comments)

twitter: A GUARANTEED WAY TO GENERATE INTEREST - 07/06/09 10:43 AM
If you're reading this, then it worked. A thought-provoking or challenging "hook" is the first step in getting attention. What you do with it after than, of course, is up to you.
In social media, products like Twitter rely on interesting "tweets" in order for people to converse. Tweets that are considered good are "retweeted". There are even awards ("Shorty Awards") for the best one-liners.
A captivating lead-in can make a huge difference, no matter what product or service you're offering. Sometimes, the difference between you and your competition might just be getting someone to stop at your store or … (10 comments)

twitter: If all your friends jumped off the roof, would you? - 02/23/09 10:50 AM
I'm sure many parents have said to their kids something along the lines of “if all your friends jumped off the roof, would you?” I know I heard that growing more way too many times...I did lots of stupid things.
Posts like this make people me me unpopular. Why? Because I question what seems to be becoming “conventional wisdom”, a lemming-like rush to embrace new media, marketing techniques and anything that gives a glimmer of a chance to strike pay dirt.
Most of the professionals I know are very busy people. Many are small business owners or self-employed. A 40-hour work … (5 comments)

twitter: Your very own online referral network - 01/13/09 04:00 PM
It's often about "connections". We refer people to each other all the time. We actively seek out referrals and it's wonderful when you pick up the phone, or open an email and someone says "you were recommended to me by..."
In your online world, you may have connections on social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, ActiveRain, Twitter and a host of other sites. Yet there is one often-overlooked but useful and mutually-beneficial tool that has seen a decline in popularity in recent years: link exchanges.
Now, before anyone gets excited, I'm not talking about the Free-For-All (FFA) style "you put … (2 comments)

twitter: Welcome to the Social Media Community : Start Here - 01/07/09 07:46 AM
Pick an Internet subject: how many "how to" guides are there, either online or in bookstores?
Web newbie? There is a myriad of introductory texts written for the semi-literate to the PHD. Need something more specific? You can find that too. Whether in print or electronic ("ebook") form, there are books galore, all vying for attention, many promising to be, in some way or another, the only book you'll ever need.
If you need a guide on something somewhat established, say HTML programming, you have much to choose from. Unlike many of their contemporary subjects, however, social media guides attempt to … (1 comments)

twitter: It's a new year, but some things haven't changed - 01/01/09 07:23 PM
I saw a disturbing tweet flash by today. Apparently one of the third party twitter application providers is reselling data (here's the link to the story). The article highlights a very valid concern with all technology: who has the information you provided and what are they doing with it? Registering for many pieces of software includes providing a user name, password and your email address. The thing is – what are you using? The risk of signing up for spam is obvious, but that can probably be dealt with. Even if the person or company takes the information you provided and … (1 comments)

twitter: Social Networking in 2009 - 12/29/08 08:23 AM
The growth of social media has been explosive in 2008, there's just no other way to describe it. Whether you use Twitter, ActiveRain, Blogger, Wordpress, Facebook, LinkedIn or another or all of the social networking tools, you'll have seen unprecedented growth in all of these and, with any such growth, come two very real risks: overkill and marginalization.
Email was hailed, and still is, a communication revolution. Like the telephone before it, email allows quick, almost instantaneousness transfer of information. Unlike the telephone, it can be more readily-accessible, in most cases free, allows the attachment of files and distribution to … (9 comments)

twitter: A balanced diet... - 12/12/08 08:25 PM
It's common knowledge that a  balanced diet is essential for a healthy lifestyle. The same can be said for an "online" diet. Whether emailing, blogging, twittering, instant-messaging, ActiveRaining (or what ever social media / networking tool you care to pick), too much of any one thing is unhealthy. For that matter too much of any one group of things (i.e. using the Internet) can be bad for you too.
I've been using the Internet before it was called that. I was one of the first users of services like Compuserv and AOL when the fastest speed you could get was 14k … (0 comments)

twitter: Making money with Twitter... - 12/09/08 04:29 PM
I was stunned.
A few weeks ago I'd played with Twitter and thought to myself that it was an interesting idea, a slightly slower form of instant messaging to some degree. I almost left it at that, except I kept hearing about Twitter and reading about it as the marketing tool to be using, especially if you need a low-cost, high-visibility solution.
So one day, I had a brainwave and put a short article out to the three or four follwers in my Twitter network. It concerned low-cost marketing techniques for small business. The next thing I knew, I was getting … (4 comments)

twitter: Twitter...and other things - 12/09/08 04:27 PM
Social networking  is all the rage on the Internet these days. New tools and sites are springing up almost weekly. It will be a while before the "survival of the species" leaves the major players to dominate the field, but social networking tools are certainly worth looking at. Like blogging, using tools such as LinkedIn, ActiveRain, Twitter and others, can be a useful and free marketing tool.
In the New Year I'll have a more in-depth article on these but if you're in the mood, you can follow us on Twitter by visiting http://twitter.com/dsegrove. We're also on ActiveRain, LinkedIn, WordPress and … (0 comments)
