Even living at the beach along North Carolina's Southern Outer Banks, I am never surprised to hear someone say that they haven't been to the beach in years.  It is like living in the mountains and knowing that most people enjoy looking at the mountains but not acutally getting out and walking them.
It is certainly not unusal these days to hear of children who rarely play outside and adults who retreat to their homes and focus mainly on watching television.
