green: Vampire energy sucking... spooky - 10/23/09 12:14 PM
I caught this interesting segment on my local news last night regarding Vampire Energy. It discusses how when you think you've turned off an appliance it may still be sucking energy (bad for both the environment and your energy bill):

After doing a little internet research I discovered that October is Energy Awareness Month and, appropriately, a number of articles on the energy sucking topic:

And here are some other pices on energy efficiency:

green: ATTENTION BC HOMEOWNERS! Breaking news regarding the LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program - 09/01/09 10:08 AM
There's bittersweet news for homeowners coming out of BC as a green initiative reaches its goal (yeah), which in turn ends the program (boo)... for now.
British Columbia’s LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program reached its goal of 40,000 initial home energy assessments and is therefore closed to new applicants. What it means is that only those who had their pre-retrofit energy assessment completed prior to August 16, 2009 are eligible for the BC Provincial Government’s LiveSmart Efficiency Incentive Program. (To read more go to this Canada.com published letter from Blair Lekstron, Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.) This does not, however, … (0 comments)

green: Water Conserving Commode-ity - 08/13/09 10:04 AM
Dissecting The Dual-Flush Toilet
Water conservation is trickling to the tips of tongues when talking about environmental issues these days.
Did you “kn-l’eau” that Canada is the second largest consumer of water per capita in the world, runner up only to the US? On average, Canucks apparently use more than 300 litres of water per person, per day... that’s almost quadruple the amount of the average Swede! If you’re curious about your water consumption, try the American Standard Water Calculator or this one from the CSGNetwork.
Of that amount of water usage, your home toilet accounts for approximately 30 per … (2 comments)

green: Green homes: fashion or trend? - 07/20/09 04:19 PM
It seems like energy efficient homes may be more of a lasting fashion than passing trend. An article on casaGURU via www.newscanada.com claims that newhomebuyers are more likely to go for energy efficient green homes than any other. Why? Because not only is it the more environmentally concious choice, but it saves money in the long run like on heating bills, for instance.
Below is an excerpt from that article:
There are selling points and then there are selling points. Energy efficiency continues to be one of the most sought after features among home buyers in Canada today; in fact a … (2 comments)

green: More ways to make your lawn look lush and lovely - 06/16/09 04:37 PM
So I seem to be on a lawn kick today, perhaps I can blame the beautiful weather Toronto's had this fine day. I found another good article that helps one achieve a garden with gorgeouse grass.
Here's an excerpt:
"When envisioning the perfect home, so many of us immediately picture a pristine outdoors where health and happiness for our family is secured behind green and gently rolling lawns. Hard work and perseverance can provide so much, but the constant demands of lawn care are often more than any of us can afford.
The time to cut and weed, fertilize, water, rake, … (1 comments)

green: Emer's Guide to Energy Saving Programs Across Canada - 06/02/09 03:10 PM
It was brough to my attention that though there are numerous rebates and grants across Canada being offered to reward homeowners who are making green deicision, it was difficult to track them all down and know what's available. Therefore I've compiled what I could find a series of city guides to make energy programs easier. Below is an excerpt from the Toronto guide, but there are also guides for Kelowna, Victoria, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Medicine Hat, Regina, Calgary, Winnipeg, Kitchener/Waterloo, Ottawa, St John, Moncton, Halifax, and Fredericton.

green: Green is the new black - 01/19/09 03:35 PM
Kermit the Frog was known to lament (in song) that "It ain't easy being green." But that song came out years ago. These days the word "green" has become a buzzword that's everywhere. But how do you know what's really green? What's the greenest? I found an article on casaGURU.com by Deanna Radaj in which she breaks down what some of the terms often connected to "going green" mean. "It's apparent that many people selling green or eco-friendly home building materials and products have no clue as to what constitutes GREEN, eco-friendly, organic, and sustainability. Here are definitions of some of … (2 comments)
