Palos Verdes homes owners love to see whales off their coast and the Whale Watching season is upon us.  It officially started December 1, 2010 and according to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, 318 whales have been spotted to date.  This is a higher number than normal and 4 whales were spotted just this morning!   Most of the whales are travelling south to Baja but one was spotted going north.

Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr, whose family designed Central Park, and his sons were the leaders in the landscape architecture and engineering of the Palos Verdes Project, the beginning of Palos Verdes real estate.  As indicated on a map that he prepared in 1924,  Olmsted anticipated many civic needs that would be realized in later years.  The Olmsted family laid out and executed the landscape design for Malaga Cove Library, Malaga Cove School and La Venta Inn.

Located across from the Norris Theatre, the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion in Rolling Hills Estates opens it's doors for many different types of activities.  It serves as a multi-function facility which holds meetings, classroom and special events. The Schaffer Forum which is located inside the premises can seat 300 for concerts and 250 for receptions and parties.  The entrance sits off the busy street and is located on the  west side of the building, which is marked by a spectacular fountain and beautiful Jacaranda trees.

There is a beautiful public golf course on the Palos Verdes Peninsula; the Los Verdes Golf Course is located at 7000 West Los Verdes Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.  The Los Verdes Golf Course was designed by William F. Bell and offers some of the best view in Southern California. This 18 hole facility features 6,617 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 71.  The course rating is 71.7 and has a slope rating of 121 on Kikuyu grass.  The course opened in 1964 and is managed by the American Golf Corporation.

Palos Verdes Tennis Club was conceived in the late 50′s when many residents of Palos Verdes Peninsula were interested in playing tennis and had no public courts where they could play.   In April of 1959, a small group started a phone campaign to get people to attend a meeting at Malaga School to discuss the possibility of a tennis facility.  Finally in 1961 an agreement was signed between the City of Palos Verdes Estates, and the Palos Verdes Tennis Club. Palos Verdes has a new restaurant called Mama Terano that opened in early October.  This trattoria was inspired by Robert Bell's (of Chez Melange) grandmother.  I have eaten at Mama Terano several times and have tried something new each visit.  I am a big fan of their Flatbread, Gnocchi (be sure to ask for the Alfredo Sauce), and Roasted Fennel & Cauliflower Gratin.
