community information: Palos Verdes Trails and Hikes - 07/01/09 06:27 AM

After being inspired by the oceanfront trails at Terrenea, I was on a quest to find other hikes and trails on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  I came across an excellent book compiled by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy entitled, "Best Hikes On The Palos Verdes Peninsula".
The book lists 32 separate trails and specifies the round trip distance, the highest & lowest elevation of the trail, directions to the trail head & where to park, and what amenities (public restrooms, picnic tables, etc) if any.  There are also aerial photos of the trail as well as photos highlighting various … (1 comments)

community information: The History of Palos Verdes - 06/25/09 06:00 AM

As part of my certification as Palos Verdes Specialist, I learned about the history of Palos Verdes Peninsula.  Even though I had lived here over 25 years, some of this was new to me.  In 1846, the Mexican government granted land known as Rancho Palos Verdes to the family of Don Jose Sepulveda.  In 1882, Jotham Bixby acquire 16,000 acres of what is now the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  In 1913 Frank Vanderlip, Sr. led a group of investor that purchased the Palos Verdes Peninsula for development and paid $1,500,000 ($93.75 per acre).  Click here to continue reading.....

community information: Terranea Resort Is Open - 06/22/09 06:48 AM

After spending last weekend at the new Terranea Resort,  I can say that it is fabulous and I recommend it to all, including Palos Verdes residents.  The views are spectacular.  We took several walks along the trails at the ocean's edge.  We walked down to the beach and sat on the rocks and listened to the surf "chatter" as it rolled back out over the stones.  There is even a cave near the jetty.  We laid on sand and took in the beauty of nature.  Click here to continue reading....

community information: South Coast Botanic Garden - 03/09/09 06:21 AM

It is Cherry Blossom Time again at South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.  This is the closest location for us to see the beauty and color of these trees.  And when the petals fall in the breeze, it is like a silent rain.  I often forget what a special place the Garden is.  One can roam around for hours enjoying beauty and nature.  It is a gift to our soul. Click here to read more......

community information: The Montemalaga Neighborhood - 03/02/09 04:52 AM

The Montemalaga neighborhood is located in Palos Verdes Estates.  The best thing about this neighborhood is the fabulous ocean and Queen's Necklace views (photo above) that many homes enjoy as this area is the highest elevation (up to 1380 feet) in Palos Verdes Estates.
The Montemalaga neighborhood is roughly 1 square mile in area and has no ocean borders.  It is located on the hill above Lunada Bay, Malaga Cove and Bluff Cove and is bordered by Rancho Palos Verdes to the east. Click here to read more.....

community information: Palos Verdes Gems - Part 3 - 02/18/09 02:35 AM

A very special place to visit in Palos Verdes Estates is the Labyrinth at Neighborhood Church.   There is a memorial plaque which reads, "For the Journey of Life to Help You find Your Way."  It is "Dedicated to the Memory of Miriam Levonian".   As you walk the path to the center (which is marked as a shell), you are to ponder your life.  I am usually struck with thoughts of all that I have to be grateful for.  Click here to read more......

community information: Surfing In Palos Verdes - 12/10/08 02:52 AM

Palos Verdes unique coastline with all its bays and coves makes for some great surfing spots.  Both of my children's friends surf and even they do not know where all the surf breaks are.  In the Fall issue of the Palos Verdes Bulletin, an article entitle "Surf Mecca" described the history of surfing in Palos Verdes and went on to name the surf breaks - Avalanche, Boneyard, Charlie's, Christmas Tree, Cove, Dominator, Exile's, Indicator, Haggarty's, Longs, Lower's, Lunada Bay, Middle's, Pinnacle, Pipe's, Rat Beach, Rat Point, Ski Jump, TA's (Tom Anderson), Turbo's and Wally's.   Click here to read more......

community information: Speed Limit Changes in Palos Verdes? - 12/04/08 02:53 AM

Do you know what the speed limit is on Palos Verdes Estates city streets?  It seems there are changes in the air.  According to the Peninsula News, the city of Palos Verdes Estates has completed a recent survey of several streets (the last review was in 2002).  "The process for setting speed limits is regulated by the California Vehicle Code, or CVS, according to a staff report.  The CVS requires that the city perform an engineering and traffic survey and periodically readopt speed limits for each street where the city wants to use radar enforcement, according to city officials." community information: More on Terranea - 12/03/08 04:25 AM

On Thursday evening, I drove down Palos Verdes Drive South and noticed lights on at our new Terranea Resort.   A call to Ara Mihranian, Project Planner at the City of Rancho Palos Verdes, confirmed that the contractors are working extended hours in the enclosed interiors of the site.  It is the developers intent to have the project finished by June 2009.   Photo above is of the entry court of the main hotel. Click here to read more......

community information: Maybe A Trader Joe's After All - 11/04/08 05:47 AM

Good news for Palos Verdes Peninsula residents.  There is a new banner (shown above) on the former Golden Lotus Restaurant site in the Golden Cove Center indicating Trader Joe's may be coming to Rancho Palos Verdes after all.  The initial plans were scrapped after the landlord decided to rescind his application with the city of Rancho Palos Verdes after some neighbors complained. community information: Bays and Coves in Palos Verdes - 10/10/08 03:14 AM

What are the names of the Bays and Coves in Palos Verdes?  That questions was asked of me a couple of weeks ago.  And as a 30 plus year resident, I could not name them all.  How lucky are we here on the Palos Verdes Peninsula that we have so many that we can't count or name them all!  Our coastline is truly magnificent!  Click here to read more...

community information: Property Taxes in Palos Verdes - 09/27/08 03:40 PM

Recently, I answered a question on Trulia Voices regarding property taxes for Palos Verdes real estate and thought it was worth a mention here also.  When a property is purchased, it is reassessed by the Los Angels County Tax Assessor using the sales price as the base.  The new property tax will be 1% of the purchase price plus any local bonds and assessments (usually averages another .0025 of the sales price).  Click here to read more...

community information: Palos Verdes Gems Part 2 - 09/11/08 03:04 AM

Here is another great spot which was submitted by Mary McPherson.  This is the Ocean Estates Trail in Rancho Palos Verdes.  This is an easy walk along the bluff of our beautiful Palos Verdes coast looking out at the ocean and several coves.   It is quiet and peaceful.  There are benches to sit and take it all in.  Click here to continue...

community information: Palos Verdes Gems Part 1 - 09/01/08 08:39 AM

This is the first in a series of special places on the Palos Verdes Peninsula which many owners of Palos Verdes real estate are not aware of.  You might say these are "secret" places.   The Gazebo at Roessler Pointis located in Palos Verdes Estates.   The entrance is at the northwest end of the parking lot for Malaga Cove School (Paseo Del Mar and Via Arroyo).  To read more, click here...

community information: Lunada Bay Neighborhood - 08/30/08 12:10 PM

The Lunada Bay neighborhood is located in Palos Verdes Estates.   My favorite things about this neighborhood are the ocean views and the coastline bluff trails for walking.  My son would say it was when the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie was being filmed (photo above) two summers ago and the cliffs were lined with people (including us) with binoculars watching.  Click here, to read more...

community information: The Blue Whale is Here! - 08/07/08 11:41 AM

Recently, there have been Blue Whale sightings only two miles off the Palos Verdes Peninsula coast near Point Vicente.  The Peninsula News reported that the whales are here to eat the abundant krill that are attracted to the nutrients near the continental shelf off our coast.  The blue whale is the largest mammal on earth (as long as 3 school buses) and can weigh up to 336,000 pounds.  To read more, click here...
