On Saturday, March 2, 2013, the Peninsula Seniors will sponsor Coffee & Cars at the Peninsula Shopping Center. The location is off Silver Spur Road and Hawthorne Boulevard in the city of Rolling Hills Estates. Car enthusiasts will bring their Hot Rod, Custom, Muscle Car, Sports Car, Antique, and other special interest vehicles, to the Peninsula Shopping Center parking lot, where you can walk around and admire the cars, meet the owners and ask them questions. If you are looking for some outdoor activities for the weekend, here are a few that Palos Verdes homes owners will enjoy. On Saturday 2/23/2013, White Point Nature Preserve is having its Outdoor Volunteer Day. They are looking for volunteers to help plant native vegetation and beautify the demonstration garden surrounding the Nature Education Center. They will be working from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and there is plenty of parking. Also on Saturday is Story Time with the Rangers at the preserve and the theme this week is Love on the Preserve. The Whale Watching season is upon us, and Palos Verdes homes owners don’t have far to go to see these whales off our coastline. The season has officially started, and according to the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, 499 whales have been counted going south, 1 headed north, and 17 calf pairs have been counted going south as of yesterday. This number is higher than past years, and in the last two years the numbers have been growing. Los Serenos de Point Vicente will be offering the Eastern Bluff Hike at Trump National Golf Course on January 27, 2013, at 3:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity for Palos Verdes homes owners who enjoy a moderate hike, to get out and enjoy the Peninsula. This hike will take you through mature coastal sage scrub and different natural habitat along the Ocean Trails Reserve. Here you can enjoy the ocean views along the bluffs and even see WWII sites. The Palos Verdes Art Center is continuing it’s annual Best House Raffle for the 11th year. This year’s dream prize is the most dramatic one of it’s kind. The year’s top prize will be a $2,000,000 Terranea Seaside Vacation Home Villa or $1,000,000 in cash. For the past ten years, the Palos Verdes Art Center has given away over $12,000,000 in cash and prizes. It is time again for owners of Palos Verdes homes (and/or tenants) who will have children entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2013 to be planning for the Kindergarten Roundup Information Program. This is an important event if you have Kindergarten age children because some Palos Verdes elementary schools are impacted. California Law (SB 1381) relating to the age requirement for Kindergarten enrollment was changed. The new law requires a child be five years old on or before October 1st. Four ships will be reproducing an 18th century naval skirmish, complete with mock cannon firing. These adventures will take place on December 26 & 29, 2012, off the coast of San Pedro right next door to Palos Verdes homes. The Rancho Caninos Dog Park at Point Vicente Park/Civic Center is now open. Located at 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard in Rancho Palos Verdes, this half acre park has separate areas for large and small dogs. There is also seating and shaded areas where “parents” can enjoy watching their furry pets have a good time. The park received its name and logo from the areas prior use as a cattle ranch in the 1830′s known as Rancho de los Palos Verdes. If your child is interested in playing during the months of January and February, now is the time to sign up. Registration deadline is December 6, 2012, with games starting in January for eight Saturday mornings; they are January 5, 12, 19, 26, February 2, 9, 16, and 23rd. For the last 56 years the Neighborhood Church has been presenting the Yule Parlor Parade. This year it will be held on Friday & Saturday, December 7 & 8, 2012. The Home Tour itself is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and the Tea and Boutique is held in the Fellowship Hall from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. Each year a selection of beautiful home are chosen and decorated in a unique manner for Christmas. Recently, the API scores were announced and the Palos Verdes Unified School District showed another performance increase. Walker Williams, the School Superintendent, announced, “In the spirit of “continuous improvement,” the District’s Academic Performance Index (API) score grew once again from 919 to 923 in 2012. The percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced in both English Language Arts & Math remains impressive.
