Changes in refrigerants can impact Home Warranties - 02/22/10 04:51 PM

Federal law now mandates that manufacturers can no longer produce HVAC equipment that runs on R22 (freon). The new refrigerant, R410A or puron, is a 'greener' product and does not deplete ozone. For some time, parts will be available to repair freon equipment, and for some time freon is available.
However, due to the change, Home Warranty companies have implemented policies that impact replacement coverage. Check with your warranty company to ensure that should your Freon unit need replacing, you have a policy that covers replacement. Some companies are offering coverage with an increased premium, but be pro-active.
