big island vacation: Snorkeling Adventure With James Arness in Hawaii - 12/18/15 12:16 PM
If you've got to make it your last day in Hawaii, I figure one may as well make one more snorkeling adventure, and who better to share it with than the spirit of James Arness? To walk on the boat that he had custom built. To sit where he sat. To touch the rails his hands once graced. But can you picture James Arness snorkeling?
The problem with snorkeling is it grabs you and won't let you go. On Christmas Day we leave for Cuba, and there is even more snorkeling in Cuba. One of the rules is you have to meet … (7 comments)

big island vacation: Royal Kona Resort Lunch With Hella Rothwell - 12/17/15 05:31 AM
My sister says from my blog it looks like I am running all over Big Island with Hella, and I guess we have been. It's quite the rollercoaster with Hella. And when you throw me into the mix, there is no telling what can happen. It's been wild and hilarious. Everything has flowed so smoothly, too, which undoubtedly is due in large part to Hella. That woman answers her phone wherever she is, unless driving with me, I guess.
We zipped right through the home inspection and then I wanted to talk to the neighbors. We found the guy next door at … (11 comments)

big island vacation: A Snorkeling Sunday at Honaunau Bay After Buying a Home - 12/14/15 02:47 AM
After snorkeling at Honaunau Bay yesterday with Hella Rothwell, I was exhausted last night and slept straight through to morning. We were in the water for quite a few hours, and I encountered a bit of unexpected excitement when my snorkeling took me in a different direction. It was a lot of fun to take off a day and just play. No cellphones, no cameras, no iPads. I didn't even call my husband, which I generally do at some point during the day, just to check in.
Well, that's a good reason to write a blog, you know, and my husband subscribes … (7 comments)

big island vacation: What You Might Not Know About Finland - 12/08/15 11:40 AM
One of the really cool things about traveling is the opportunity to meet people from different walks of life and foreign places. To glimpse a small snapshot of another person's life, to peer into a tiny klaidoscope and pick up interesting tidbits you might not otherwise ever get to encounter. I ask good questions, and being in real estate for all these decades has refined and honed my skill to ask plenty of open-ended questions. If you're doing a really good job of it, you hardly talk at all, and then the other person thinks you, too, are the most interesting … (5 comments)

big island vacation: Do Not Try This at a Restaurant - 12/08/15 05:32 AM
I hate it when I do klutzy things like knock over a glass of water on the table at a restaurant. Of course that's better than, say, pouring an entire glass of cabernet sauvignon into your lap and on top of your lobster, like I did last night. The glass of water incident was the night before. I had discovered that I could cleverly prop up my iPhone between my plate and glass of water when I FaceTimed with my sister for lunch. It was just like going to lunch with her, except I am in Hawaii, of course, and she … (13 comments)

big island vacation: No Adversity is Why Some People Don't Like Hawaii - 12/02/15 03:16 AM
When I got off the plane and met my limo driver, he seemed taken aback that I was here in Hawaii by myself. My husband doesn't much care for Hawaii, I told him. I guess he's not used to meeting passengers in baggage claim on Big Island who talk about people who don't like to visit Hawaii.
Why not, he asked incredulously. To him, that type of attitude is most likely inconceivable. Well, probably because my husband likes adversity. It's what he's used to and he doesn't like situations that are different.
Then, I added: He grew up in Chicago.
Well, that … (10 comments)

big island vacation: Raw Abalone is a Treat on the Big Island of Hawaii - 09/04/15 06:10 AM

Oh, my goodness, I almost forgot to stop by Active Rain this morning and say hello. For a Friday before Labor Day weekend, it's been pretty busy, especially since I am already on vacation in Hawaii on the Big Island. But you know that's what happens. It's odd. The minute an agent steps foot on an aircraft -- hey, since when have the names of planes, airliners or airplanes changed to AIRCRAFT, like it's some sort of artsy construction when it's just a hunk of poorly assembled metal with a crummy blackbox that often fails; I mean, can you see Peter, … (8 comments)

big island vacation: The Best Bed and Breakfast in Hilo, Hawaii: The Palms Cliff House Inn - 12/30/10 03:46 AM

You might wonder how I can say The Palms Cliff House Inn is the best bed and breakfast in Hilo, Hawaii, when it's the only bed and breakfast I have stayed at, but it's not just my opinion. The Palms Cliff House Inn was voted the best bed and breakfast in Hilo by readers of the Hawaiian Tribune-Herald for 2010.
This view is from room #5 on the second floor. There are only 8 rooms, four on each floor.

This is the view of the front of the home. It is owned by John and Michelle Gamble who moved … (10 comments)
