downtown sacramento: A View and a Note From Downtown Sacramento - 05/09/11 10:50 AM
How complacent have we become that when something doesn't work right, we just take it for granted? We say, OK, it's not working now but it will probably work later, and we go about our day doing something else. Sometimes, we might unplug an electronic component and plug it back in, or remove the battery and replace it, which may or may not correct the problem. But that's about as proactive as we become. We're not willing to invest more time in these types of projects for a variety of reasons. It could be because things that stop working are outside

downtown sacramento: Passover Memory and a New Short Sale Listing Downtown Sacramento - 04/23/11 11:20 AM
The month of April brings us Passover, Easter and a new listing near downtown Sacramento. It's a fun time of year because maple trees are leafing out, roses are beginning to bloom and I feel like jumping in my car, putting down the top and zooming around mountain roads like a crazy woman. But no, I am here typing a blog for you to read. Just for the record, let me say that I have had the pleasure of being a guest at exactly 2 Passover Seders in my life. I made a mistake at the first one that I did

downtown sacramento: Urban Life Awaits You -- Downtown Sacramento 3-Bedroom Home for $329,000 - 02/19/10 09:28 AM
Let me just come out and say there is nothing like this on the market in downtown Sacramento. Here is a unique opportunity to buy that 3-bedroom, 2-bath home your heart has been searching for at an affordable price. If you crave an urban lifestyle, this is the home for you. Of course, it sits across the street from multiple-family housing but what doesn't in downtown Sacramento? That's part of the lifestyle. You get a mix of rentals, sometimes commercial, among residential homes. That's what attracts urban buyers to downtown. Urban buyers want to live close to work, shopping and restaurants.

downtown sacramento: Review of the Grange Restaurant in Downtown Sacramento - 04/14/09 10:24 AM
The Grange has received mixed reviews since opening downtown Sacramento last winter. When I asked my husband where he wanted to go to celebrate his birthday, the word "Grange" left his lips, so that's where I made our reservation. The Grange is part of a new hotel, The Citizen, remodeled inside an 88-year-old office building. The entrance is on 10th Street, with valet parking on J Street. The feeling inside the restaurant is that of an airplane hangar, designed to be upscale urban with a bit of an eclectic twist. I sat there imagining elevators and employees running late for work,

downtown sacramento: If You Fall From a 10-Story Building and Land On Your Back, Your Eyeballs Pop Out - 01/02/09 08:31 PM
While on vacation last week, I finished reading "When You Are Engulfed in Flames," by David Sedaris. I've read everything Sedaris has published -- some of you may know him as the brother of Amy Sedaris or maybe you were in the audience with me when he came to downtown Sacramento to speak at the Crest Theatre last year. I always learn something from him -- such as did you know if you fell from a 10-story building and landed on your back that your eyeballs would pop out of your head? Yeah, it's true. He spent time at the coroner's

downtown sacramento: How to Celebrate Fall with Lunch at the Firehouse Restaurant Courtyard, Old Sacramento - 09/26/08 09:47 AM
My associate, Rose Mary Swart, invited me to lunch at The Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento. That's Rose Mary, on the left. I don't know who she is sitting next to. OK, it's me. Rose Mary says she loves to celebrate the beginning of fall by doing lunch in the tree-canopied courtyard of the Firehouse Restaurant, and this may very well become a tradition with me, too. Out of all the dining areas at The Firehouse, the courtyard is my favorite. The biggest problem during autumn is keeping the little tiny seeds that fall from the trees off your table.

downtown sacramento: Shooter Arrested on Bus in Land Park - 09/23/08 09:25 AM
It's nice to know that our bus drivers are alert and listen to radioed police reports. Seems a homeless woman shot a disabled man yesterday at the bus stop on 6th and J Streets in downtown Sacramento. Eyewitnesses said she asked the man for money and he didn't give it to her. So, she pulled out a gun and shot him. Then she walked over to 9th Street and got on the bus. The police boarded the bus at Riverside and Broadway in Land Park and arrested her. The bus driver notified the police after he recognized the shooter from the

downtown sacramento: Macy's Downtown Sacramento Adventure - 12/03/07 09:28 AM
It's unbelievable, but I actually finished all my holiday shopping in November this year, thanks to online shopping. Well, except for one present. It's not that I don't enjoy fighting crowds, waiting in long lines at cash registers or sitting behind rows of cars trying to get out of the downtown plaza parking garage in Sacramento, but it's much more efficient to tap a few keys and watch merchandise show up on my doorstep. One thing I have learned over the years is the closer it gets to Christmas, the more insane the crowds become. Since I knew exactly what I wanted

downtown sacramento: This Weekend at Sacramento's Westfield Downtown Plaza - 12/02/07 04:26 PM
FESTIVAL OF TREES AND LIGHTS The Festival of Trees and Lights Week, which started November 26, ends in Sacramento today. Major Heather Fargo proclaimed the week as an interfaith community fundraiser event to help support downtown homeless programs, in conjunction with volunteers from the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Downtown Sacramento Partnership, the California State Association of Counties and the Pyramid Alehouse. During this first-ever Festival of Trees and Lights, visitors placed bids on decorated trees (the ornaments were wired on to prevent them from falling off) and listened to live music and Christmas choirs
