The only thing more disturbing about trying to turn on an appliance and finding out it doesn't work is having the thing explode on the spot. Although in some ways, an exploding appliance could be a very comforting thing because the solution to the dilemma would be immediately and very clearly presented. You could just buy a new whatever.
