Hickory is a Leader in North Carolina Recycling
 
On average, more than 65 percent of Hickory solid waste customers recycle, which exceeds the North Carolina average, which is 57 percent.
 
Hickory customers have blue recycling bins and these items are acceptable to put in the bins:
newspapers
magazines
catalogs
phone books
cooking oil bottles
glass (green, clear and brown)
plastic (#1 and #2 found on bottom of containers),
plastic bottles (milk and juice jugs, soda bottles, detergent bottles),
aluminum cans
tin cans
 
Items that are not accepted in bin are:
Paper plates and cups
plastic plates and cups,
Styrofoam
 tin pans
cake bins
foil
pie pans,
cereal boxes
cardboard, cartons
hardback books
fruit cups
grocery bags
 
Hickory has two recycling dropoff centers:
9th Avenue, NE (beside Fire Station #2) 
1050 1st Avenue, SW
These locations accept all the items accepted in curbside bins as well as cardboard, mixed paper, and cereal boxes.
