Galloway "Belted" Cows - Southborough, Massachusetts

As I was driving through the back roads of Southborough last week, I came upon a herd of "striped cows."  I had to get out of my car to get a closer look and spent some time watching these amazing animals as they peacefully grazed.
This group of 13 belted Galloway cows, or " belties" as the locals call them, roam the conservation land near Breakneck Hill Farm in Southborough, Massachusetts.
Belted cows originated in South West Scotland and are distinguished by their white belts of hair surrounding their bodies.  Due to their unique appearance they are sometimes referred to as "Oreo cows."
The care and feeding of this local herd is supported by a number of events that are organized at various times of the year.  The Breakneck Hill Cow Fund was started in 2001 when the ranch owner sought help to defray the cost of maintaining these animals.
The cows feed on three bales of hay twice a day and at a cost of $6 per bale, the cost of their care adds up quickly.
The most recent event given in their benefit was a Texas styled poker tournament which was held earlier this month in Southborough.
