North Arlington Neighborhoods: Cherrydale

Just a few miles from Arlington National Cemetery and the National Mall, the Cherrydale neighborhood has a rich history.
According to the Cherrydale Citizens Association, Union troops camped out there during the Civil War. After the war, many of them stayed in the area and made Cherrydale their home. Cherrydale continued to prosper throughout the years, and in 2003 was granted a National Historic Site designation.
Cherrydale is filled with “mail-order” houses. “But how does one order a house through the mail?” I hear you saying. Basically, all of the materials (except the foundation) were shipped to your location. You then assembled the house or hired someone else to do it. It must’ve been a great way to build a solid house, because many of these homes are still standing strong.
Cherrydale is convenient to the shopping, dining, and nightlife of Arlington, and also to public transportation and major commuter routes. The neighborhood is made up of a variety of types of houses, from bungalows built in the 1920s and ’30s and Cape Cods constructed in the 1940s and ’50s, to newer arts-and-crafts style homes that have gone up in the last decade.
