Watching The Torch in Downtown Vancouver
This morning I’m watching the Olympic Torch being run through downtown Vancouver.Among the runners are Rolly Fox, Terry’s Father, Walter Gretzey and Dal Richards. Walter Gretzey is well known but Dal Richards is a Vancouver legend.A big band leader for seventy years, now aged 93, Dale did run his leg of the relay. What a trip that must have been past long forgotten dance halls of the 1930s, 40s, 50, 60. Danceland is gone, the Commodore modernized, the Palamore taken by fire long ago. The green copper roofed Vancouver Hotel where for many years we dined and then dance to Dal’s band playing and his wife Lorraine McAllister singing, remains. Dal ran along Granville Street past the many theatres he played at when performers such as Bob Hope and Red skeleton regularly performed in Vancouver: the Vogue and Orpheum to name two.Here come the protestors!Jim Green the most prolific activist for Vancouver east side residents has just acknowledged the benefits the Olympics have brought to the “east side” in terms of housing and development.VANOC has taken care to include including many local east side residents including leaders, natives, and those that we would call unfortunate.So they have succeeded in blocking the ... more
