Olivet College in South Central Michigan
Olivet College in South Central Michigan received its State charter as a college in 1859 after being founded by Rev. John J. Shipherd.  He and 39 followers arrived to the wilderness hilltop now known as Olivet in 1844, with the dream of founding a coeducational Christian college open to students of all races. 
Olivet College in South Central Michigan is an architectural delight, and has grown over the years to several buildings in the City of Olivet since 1844. 
As Olivet College in South Central Michigan continued to grow during the 1930s and 40s, the college developed a national reputation for adopting the "Oxford model," a tutorial system used in European universities that relied heavily on seminars and interaction between faculty and students.
It was during this period that the college also sponsored a series of writers' conferences that brought some of the world's leading literary talents to Olivet College in South Central Michigan. Some of the now world famous writers at the time that participated in this program included Katherine Anne Porter, Sherwood Anderson and Ford Maddox Ford.
