Reading To Hearing Impaired Children To Pay It Forward

Yesterday I visited Camelot Elementary School in Annandale VA to read a story (selected by the teachers) to hearing impaired children. Camelot is one of several elementary Fairfax County Public Schools that has specially equipped classrooms for assisting the hearing impaired with their early learning skills.I wear a microphone and my voice is transmitted by way of an electronic wireless loop in the room. Most of the children have had cochlear implants and hear my voice through the electronic device that was implanted in their ear. As is typical of first or second graders these kids are very active and inquisitive - my reward is the hugs and smiles I get when I am finished with my story and knowing I have contributed to a young person's positive learning experience.This is one of the activities supported by the West Springfield Rotary Club. Many of our members (myself included) have signed on as reading volunteers. It requires about an hour out of my day three times a year and I would fight anyone who tried to remove my name from the list of readers.
