South Side High School in Rockville Centre NY is one of only a small number of open-enrollment public schools to be ranked among the top 25 high schools in the country according to US News & World Report which released its 2012 rankings on May 8th.
South Side ranks 22nd in the nation out of 22,000 evaluated schools and second in New York State behind the Baccalaureate School for Global Education in Long Island City.
Many of the high-ranking schools are either charter schools, which are publicly funded and do not follow all local and state educational regulations, or magnet schools which offer specialized curricula and have selective admission.  Charter schools are usually in high demand and admission is often offered through a lottery.
