Ok Ok - I'll admit it.  I frequently put my wet sponge in the microwave for a 30-45 seconds thinking I'm doing a good thing... maybe yes, maybe no.
I just watched this video on Yahoo's Shine network...and, no, microwaving does NOT inhibit the awful smell.  But, yes, it does kill some germs.

...  Good news though is that leaving a wet sponge to soak up the sun's rays - eliminates odors!!  Who knew? (Sorry, if you see the advert... I wasn't able to figure out how to lose it.)
So, I guess I'll guess have two sponges rotating at any given time in my kitchen... one to use for four days, one out sunbathing for four days!  Rotate and repeat :)
