Julian Castro: Mayor of San Antonio
Castro was born in San Antonio on September 16, 1974[2] to Maria "Rosie" Castro and Jessie Guzman.[3] He is the identical twin brother of politician Joaquín Castro.[2] His mother was a Chicano political activist who helped establish the Chicano political party La Raza Unida which means "The United Race".[4] She ran unsuccessfully for San Antonio City Council in 1971.[2] Known for being strong and a firebrand, she regards The Alamo as a symbol of bad times and has stated, "I can truly say that I hate that place and everything it stands for."[5] Castro has said, "My mother is probably the biggest reason that my brother and I are in public service. Growing up, she would take us to a lot of rallies and organizational meetings and other things that are very boring for an 8-, 9-, 10-year-old".[6] His father, Jessie Guzman, was a community activist in the 1970s and a retired math teacher.
