Why’s it called Baton Rouge? Bâton rouge means “red pole” in French — and there was a Muscogee boundary marker near the site of what we know as the city. French explorer Sieur d’Iberville came up the Mississippi in 1699 when he saw the red pole, and Baton Rouge was born. (Historic Iberville Parish is a great place to gather some additional knowledge on the area, too.)
 
Interestingly, Baton Rouge is a lot older than that, though. Evidence of human habitation here dates back as early as 8000 B.C.E., and earthwork mounds were built here by hunter-gatherer societies during the Middle Archaic Period.
