Balboa Park, a 1200-acre urban park in San Diego, is a real treasure, and we have enjoyed multiple visits to the gardens, museums (including the world famous San Diego Zoo), and the House of Pacific Relations Inernational Cottages. 
 
These quaint cottages, 34 of them representing different countries, are great fun to visit. We were at the international food festival back in 2012 and checked a number of them out. Alas, the one for Sweden - my maternal side of my family - was closed that day.
 
Each cottage has historical information, exhibits, souvenirs you can buy, sometimes food, and hosts who are happy to share their knowledge of each country's culture, history and traditions.
