Vacant home becomes dumping ground
People are illegally dumping mattresses, chairs and other junk across the street from Maurine Hewitt's home on Concord in Detroit. And she's tired of looking at it.

Hewitt has called the city's Ombudsman office several times about the vacant home. It has been open to trespassers since October 2006 and nothing has been done. "It's disgraceful, and just embarrassing to see this on our block. It's bringing down the quality of the neighborhood," Hewitt said.
Darlene Williams with the Ombudsman's office has forwarded the complaint to the Environmental Affairs Department. She last followed up in January. "I have yet to get a response to this but will try again," she said. Williams said it typically takes about 30 days to get a response. But since Detroit switched its bulk trash pickup from monthly to every three months, the staff has been flooded with calls about illegal dumping.
Who's responsible?
For problems with illegal dumping, call the Ombudsman's office at (313) 224-6000 and complaints will be handled by Vincent Nathan, director of environmental affairs.
