After another year of worldwide economic ups and downs, the news is no longer whether the Dow Jones Industrial Average is up or down on any given day. The news is that the stock market is volatile. It's hard to believe that tax season is nearly here! If you own a Silver Spring home that is an exclusive rental property, you can deduct numerous expenses including taxes, insurance, mortgage interest, utilities, housekeeping, and repairs. According to HouseLogic, even towels and sheets are deductible! Use Schedule E. You can also write off depreciation, which is the value lost due to the wear and tear a home experiences over time.Treat the rental property like a business, says Mark Steber, chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt Tax Services. Keep detailed records and maintain a separate checking account. Figure you’ll spend a (0 comments)

Asking the Right Questions at an Open House - 12/21/11 11:45 AM
Making the Most of an Open House You Attend... Open houses are a time-honored tradition in real estate because they give agents a prime opportunity to showcase a for-sale home, meet prospective buyers and schmooze with neighbors who invariably drop by. Many agents are eager to quiz open house attendees about their home-buying plans. "How long have you been looking for a home? Are you working with an agent? Are you pre-qualified for a mortgage?" they ask. Why not turn the tables? An open house can be an opportunity for you to pump a local agent for some information about for-sale (0 comments)

NAR to Congress: Home Owners Need Safe, Affordable Mortgages - 12/13/11 05:50 PM
We agree with the National Association of Realtors®: American home buyers and home owners need access to affordable, safe mortgages in all local markets, no matter what’s happening in the economy. That's what NAR Director Tom Salomone told the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises last week. To make sure consumers can get mortgages even when the economy falters, the government needs to continue to support the nation’s two giant mortgage guaranty companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Salomone said. Private companies buy mortgages from the lenders that make the loans retreat from the mortgage marketplace (0 comments)

Experiencing a theft, flood, fire, or other casualty loss can be devastating. Imagine trying to list from memory for your insurance claim every single item that was damaged or destroyed. The task will be less daunting if you create a home inventory in advance and keep it in a safe place. We turned to HouseLogic for some great ideas on this very topic. Having a digital camera and camcorder will make creating an inventory much easier. Set aside enough time to review your insurance policies, dig up receipts, document your possessions, and figure out where you’ll store your records. One day (1 comments)

Recent economic upheaval has taken a hefty toll. Looking forward to 2012, it’s impossible to know what’s next and the kind of an impact that an upturn or a downturn at the national level stands to have on your family’s finances.
