Eli Lilly and Company, the giant American drug company, agreed to pay nearly $1.5 billion in fines for marketing one of its medicines for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

Honda joined fellow Japanese carmaker Toyota in cutting output further on Friday, as a top European official warned some of the region’s manufacturers might not survive a “brutal” 2009 for the industry.

The number of existing homes sold during November plummeted 8.6% as prices plunged by record amounts, according to a closely watched housing industry report issued Tuesday.

On a Wednesday afternoon in late December, the average wait to sell clothing at Buffalo Exchange, a Manhattan consignment shop, was about 25 minutes. Stocks rallied Friday, with investors starting off a new year on the right foot, after an abysmal 2008, and the Dow closing above 9,000 for the first time since November.

Canada will provide roughly $4 billion in aid to its automotive sector, officials announced Saturday, honoring a previous pledge to provide 20 percent of whatever was offered to automakers by the U.S. government. The 4 billion Canadian dollars equals about $3.3 billion in U.S. dollars.
