More Fun Coming to Edmond, Oklahoma

More fun is on the way to Edmond, Oklahoma, just in time for the spring and summer. The spacecraft-themed Chitwood Park will launch a fun, new design for kids of all ages in March, weather permitting of course. The design will expand on the current spacecraft theme of the old rocket slide with new custom-made playground equipment.

The original rocket slide has become somewhat of a safety issue over the years. Children are able to crawl through spaces that they shouldn't have and pull bars off. The rocket slide was added to Chitwood Park in the late 1960s. Many of Edmond's adult residents can remember playing on the rocket slide as a child.

Since the rocket slide is no longer in compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines, the Edmond Parks and Recreation Department decided to remove it and add a new custom made one. The new playground will also be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, which will allow every child with a disability to enjoy the playground equipment, too. Padding around areas of the playground will also be added for softer landings.

The Parks and Recreation Department decided almost five years ago, as part of a five-year strategic plan, to update the facility with custom made equipment totaling just over $100,000. Usually, the neighborhood association members assist with updating area parks, but the Chitwood Neighborhood Alliance was not formed until 2007. So, the Parks and Recreation Department is doing it themselves.

Edmond residents seem really excited about the update to the park. It will be the most unique playground in all of Edmond's parks system. It really shows that Edmond is looking into the future.

The Centennial Groves are a gateway to Edmond , Oklahoma and they are getting a financial boost from the Edmond City Council for improvement projects. The Centennial Groves welcoming site will receive just over $34,000 to plant new trees and for a good irrigation system.

The Centennial Groves project will include long-term development and quality of tree parks as well as other landscaping at 2^nd Street , 15^th Street and 33^rd Street along I-35.

A budget of $187,000 was approved and setup by the City Council for Street Scape and median maintenance which included Centennial Groves. Some of the money will pay for contracting services. Some of it will also pay for electrical costs. Some money will also be dedicated to paying for mowing the grass and tree replacements and the expenses of entrance improvements that have already been done.

The Centennial Groves project truly shows that the City of Edmond really does value its environment and is looking out for the future by making the community a better place to live now. It looks like Edmond is trying to maintain its integrity as being named one of the top 100 "Best Places to Live" in 2006 by Money Magazine.

Seven Ways to Save for a Downpayment

In today's economy , it is harder than ever to save for a downpayment to buy a new home. It's now one of the biggest problems facing potential homebuyers. On one hand money can give you the greatest purchasing power if you have enough, but on the other hand it can also greatly limit your purchasing power if you don't have enough.

Many people are looking for alternatives to saving the money themselves. Therefore, I have some tips on how to accumulate the necessary funds to purchase a new home :

· Borrow or sell against an asset. Borrowing against an asset such as a car is acceptable but can be a little risky. You will have to still qualify with the additional debt. Selling an asset is the most acceptable because it increases the amount of money you have available.

· Have a relative or a really good friend give you the money as a gift. You will have to prove the money was given as a gift and not a loan. This can easily be done by documentation. Anyone who pays taxes is allowed to give a gift of $10,000 per year per person without paying a gift tax. Here's an example of how that will work: Your father could give you $10,000 and your spouse $10,000. Your mother could do the same. You would then have $40,000. Most lenders don't require that much down, but that is how it can work. If the money needs to be paid back, do so in monthly installments that can be agreed upon.

· Borrow against your 401K policy. You can borrow against your 401K or cash it out. If you borrow against it , you will have added debt and will still have to qualify for the loan with the additional debt. If you cash it out, you will be subject to withdraw penalties.

· Ask the seller to pay. You can ask the seller to pay for all or part of the non-recurring closing cost as long as they're within allowable limits. Your real estate agent will help you make an offer on any home you are interested in buying. You can also ask the seller to carry back financing. In any case that the seller does not need all their equity right away, you can ask them to carry some of the financing. This will reduce the amount you pay down.

· Try to obtain zero point or low point loan. If you are able to obtain a low or zero point loan, your closing costs will be reduced substantially.

· Consider a different loan program. There are several loan programs out there. Your loan officer will help you choose the loan that's best for your situation. There are also several programs that will assist homebuyers with their downpayments.

The Wizard of Oz is coming to Edmond North High School

Here's a wonderful story about a great high school in Edmond , Oklahoma .

Soon Edmond will see tornados, lions and witches flying through the air of the Edmond North High School . The dreams of fifty-two local high school students will come true when they star in the Wizard of Oz musical in March. These energetic students will dance, sing and fly in the upcoming musical.

The Wizard of Oz has been an iconic American musical fantasy since 1939. The musical was based on the 1900 children's novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."

Tickets go on sale this week in Edmond , Oklahoma as rehearsals also begin. Seats and equipment will be rented, totaling $55,000. The money used to rent the seats and equipment came through the support of the community over a two year period.

The flying effects will be supplied by ZFX in Kentucky and costumes and set design will be rented from a music theater in Wichita .

Chris Castleberry, a choreographer, will teach the students the dances and oversee all practices. He will also oversee a full orchestra that will be performing for the musical.

Students will set up and maintain all lights and sound. It's unique and will have mistakes. Remember, it's live theater. There will also be over 100 parents participating in the set up of the musical. Parents will help with ticket sales, publicity, merchandise, concessions, decorations, food, t-shirts and programs.

Performances will be held on March 5^th & 6^th at 2 p.m. and March 7^th at 8 p.m. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $7 for senior citizens and children under 3.

It looks like Edmond is not only a great place to live, but also a great place for education and fun.

Many new homeowners have the same question, "How will my status as a new homeowner affect my taxes?" and "What are some deductions I should be aware of?". Although I cannot provide specific directions on taxes, I can, however, tell you a few things you can deduct on your return to receive the full benefits of home ownership.

For the 2008 tax year, homeowners who do not itemize will be able to deduct property taxes up to $500 for single taxpayers and $1,000 for married couples filing jointly. This can be deducted on top of standard deductions.

Tax rules can be complex for many of us as they are always changing. It is best to consult with your tax professional to determine how deductions will apply in your situation.

Typically, itemizers can deduct interest paid on home mortgages, state and local property taxes, interest paid on home equity loans for credit lines, some or all private mortgage insurance premiums if your household income is under $109,000, and mortgage points.

Good luck in your new home and on your taxes. Be sure to ask your tax professional about these deductions so you can get the maximum on your tax refund.

Make Your Guest Room Inviting

The holidays are just around the corner, and many of us are planning to invite guests into our homes. And, of us who are fortunate enough to have an extra room to offer our guests, we want them to feel as comfortable as possible during their stay.

I have been thinking of some ways to make my own guest room comfortable, hospitable and inviting for my guests. So there's no better time than now to share some of my ideas.

Comfort comes first and foremost. Start with clean bed linens. You may even want to consider adding extra pillows, blankets and even a featherbed mattress topper for your guests. A couple of bottles of water in a small ice bucket and a light snack will make your guests feel even more comfortable when they arrive. Also, make sure the room has plenty of light and a small, low light lamp on the night-table.

Space is another key factor when having guests. De-clutter the room. Take away all your knick-knacks to make extra space. Providing your guests with extra space for their luggage and small items like keys or a purse will make them happy, too. Make space in the closet and leave a few empty hangers and clear out a couple of drawers from your chest. This will be helpful to your guests.

Privacy is very important to many people. So, check to see if your window coverings give good light control and privacy. If they do, you're good to go. If they don't, consider replacing them with new ones. And, make sure your guest room has a lock on the door for added privacy.

Little extras can go a long way in helping your guests feel comfortable. Add an alarm clock to the room. Install a phone and put a note pad with pens next to it. Leave a box of tissues near the bed. If possible add a small television with a remote in your guestroom. Magazines or newspaper are great for those guests who love to read.

A great idea, if you have guests visiting that are interested in visiting the local attractions, is to fill a basket with tourist brochures and a map of the area.

Home Maintenance Tips for the Fall

As many homeowners already know, owning a home can be a never ending job. As a homeowner myself, it seems like I finish one repair job just in time to start another. But over the years, I have also found that regular home maintenance goes a long way in repair prevention. Following a regular maintenance schedule will only take a short time and can be spread out over the fall months. And it will save you time and money in the end.

Here are some tips I find helpful:

· Change your furnace filter. If you have forced-air heat, it is simple and inexpensive to change this filter. If not changed on a regular basis, the furnace can't push warm or cool air into your homes rooms. Having a clean filter will also cut down on your energy bills. Some filters can be reused once washed, but check your filters requirements before washing it to make sure it's reusable. Also, change filters again each season.

· Reseal windows. It's a good idea to reseal your windows every fall. Check windows for cracked or missing seal. The seal is a putty that seals a bond around the window frame. Begin with adding the putting in needed areas and gently press the new putty in place. Be sure to also use a flexible blade putty knife to smooth the putty and give it a flat look. If you plan to paint around the windows, let the putty dry for at least three weeks.

· Replace door weather stripping. Check the weather stripping on every exterior door of your home. If there is any stripping torn or missing, replace it. Weather stripping is easy to install and is inexpensive.

· Clean chimney. This is more of a safety issue. It is very important to have your chimney swept out once a year, and the fall is the best time to do it.

· Clean gutters. Toward the end of fall is a great time to clear the debris from your homes gutters. Clogged gutters can cause water damage, and that can be a very expensive repair that can easily be avoided. Clean them again at the end of spring.

· Replace smoke detector batteries. It's a good idea to replace your smoke detector batteries on a regular basis. Changing them at the beginning of each season will help you remember better. Even if your smoke detectors are hardwired to your home, you still need to replace the batteries on a regular basis in case of power outages.

Simple home maintenance like this can save you so much hassle when it comes to repairs. Winter begins December 21^st, so you may want to get started now.

Anyone looking to relocate to a great community with awesome schools can count on Edmond , Oklahoma . Students in Edmond are smart and love to read. The principal of Deer Creek Elementary recently had to pay-up on a challenge she offered her students. Mrs. Straughn challenged her students to read 6,000 books. She called the challenge "Cruise into a Good Book."

The students of Deer Creek Elementary not only read 6,000 books, they went far and above that mark reading over 12,500 books. So, to pay-up on the challenge, Mrs. Straughn had to pack for a cruise in 1 minute, scuba dive in a kiddy pool and dance with a ship captain.

The challenge lasted for three weeks. The first week the students blew teachers away by reading over 4,500 books. The second week students read over 3,700 books, and over 4,200 in the last week.

Mrs. Straughn actually went scuba diving in a kiddy pool that was set up in the school's gym. From the looks of it, the kids really got into the challenge. This is Mrs. Straughn's fourth consecutive year winning the state's Reading Challenge contest. Deer Creek student's even donated six suitcases filled to the top with books to a local women's shelter.

The goal of the Reading Challenge in to instill the love of reading in children at a young age. After thirteen years of the challenge, it still shows today in Edmond 's students.

Most Oklahoma City Residents Agree That City Services Are Above National Average

In a recent citizen satisfactory survey, 85% of Oklahoma City residents agree the city is moving in the right direction and is a great place to work, live and raise a family. Residents agree the city is above national standards when it comes to city services. So, of course, I have to pass this along to let everyone know there is another good reason to buy a home in Oklahoma City.

The quality of the city's customer service was ranked 24% above the national average. City services were ranked 18% above national average and almost all Oklahoma City residents are satisfied with the quality of utilities, fire, police, ambulance, parks and recreation programs and facilities.

The city's streets were ranked the highest priority for three years in a row. Public transit was ranked the highest priority for two years in a row. Also, most residents agree to pay an extra $4 a month on their water bill to help make ambulance service more affordable and avoid out of pocket expenses.

This is only the third year the ETC has conducted the citizen satisfaction survey, which is done in June and July. The surveys response rate was only 40%, so hopefully, we can get the word out and have more Oklahoma City residents participate next year.

Helping Edmond 's Hometown Heroes

A new non-profit organization in Edmond , Oklahoma has been formed to help local service men and women. Recently, a longtime Edmond resident and Marine was able to take advantage of donations from the organization.

The Edmond Sun wrote a two-part series about the Marine, who served in Iraq and now has no money to buy food. The Marine is currently a student at the University of Central Oklahoma . After seeing this Marine's story, Tom Guild, another Edmond resident, wanted to start an organization to help fund service members who fought for our country.

The very first committee meeting has already been held. The committee decided that the funds will be used for Edmond 's veterans who are college students. There will be another committee meeting Sunday from 2-3 p.m. on 1701 S. Broadway at Pepe's Mexican Restaurant. New members are always welcome.

Edmond is Awarded Again for Financial Excellence

This is the 22^nd consecutive year that Edmond , Oklahoma has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, by the Government Finance Officers Association. The certificate was awarded for Edmond's comprehensive annual financial reporting.

Awesome job, Edmond . The award recognizes conformance with high standards for preparing local and state financial reports. The Government Finance Officers Association says that attaining this award shows a great and significant accomplishment by the government and its management team.

There are five hundred and ninety counties, towns and cities in the state of Oklahoma that are eligible for the award. This time, there were thirteen local government entities that were awarded, some including Oklahoma City , Tulsa , Sand Springs, Mustang, Stillwater , Shawnee , Guymon and Norman .

The City of Edmond's financial report was judged by a panel of impartial officials to meet the highest standards of the program. One of the program's standards include demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure that clearly shows the city's financial story.

Edmond’s Arcadia Lake Turns Into A Storybook Fantasy For Halloween

This is a great event for Edmond, Oklahoma residents with children for Halloween. Arcadia Lake's Spring Creek Park will become a true storybook fantasy October 23-31 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. There will be 19 different storybook scenes that will include Pinocchio, Hansel and Gretel, the Three Little Pigs, the Itsy Bitsy Spider, Humpty Dumpty, Rapunzel and more.

The event will cost $5 per child. This will include a half mile trick-or-treating trail, a game area, a hayride and more. Those who attend will also get to roast marshmallows and hotdogs over an open fire. Refreshments will also be available for sale.

The Storybook Forest is an annual event that was originally for adults, but now it is totally focused on family. So bring your family in their best storybook costume and come out to enjoy the fun. Last year's event saw over 5,000 people.

The event is so successful because of all the volunteer help. For those who want to volunteer, there will be costumes available. The Storybook Forest needs at least 35 people each night to operate. Many of the volunteers come from the local Boy and Girl Scouts, high schools, the University of Central Oklahoma drama groups and Key Clubs.

Kids Having Fun And Raising Money In Edmond

On Tuesday morning, several Edmond , Oklahoma students went on a Jungle Safari to raise money as part of the Cross Timbers walk-a-thon theme. Students were happy as they traipsed along the Jungle Safari to the tune of "The Lion King." Parents also had their fair share of fun. Some walked with their children, while some cheered and held class banners.

Students supported one another in great ways. Students mixed and mingled. Fourth graders walked with kindergartners, third graders walked with first graders, and fifth graders walked with second graders.

The safari theme helped students focus on protecting our environment and planet. Students also learned about endangered species like the golden lion tamarin monkey, and how to participate in national conservation. They will also get to participate in a national conservation organization later in the school year to raise money that will help save endangered species.

The walk was coordinated by Diane Talopana. She hoped to raise at least $30,000 for the school to purchase two ceiling-mount-projectors for the media center and cafeteria, nine smart boards, and nine sound systems.

Many students learned that walking is a healthy thing to do, and that it will allow them to be healthy when they grow up.

An event like this helps families ban together and do something other than sell products. It allows them to get exercise for donations.

Soon there will be many projects to beautify the campus. Students are totally focused on keeping our environment clean and helping the earth.

Looks like there's another great reason to be in Edmond .

Governor Brad Henry's top military adviser, Major General Harry Wyatt III, has announced his plans to the Edmond Kiwanis Club to ask the Legislature for $2 million for a new wing for the Forty-Fifth Infantry Division Museum.

Major General Harry Wyatt III, AKA Bud, is in command of units of the Air and Army National Guard and over sees the museum. On Wednesday, at a Kiwanis luncheon at the University of Central Oklahoma , Wyatt was the featured speaker.

At the luncheon, Wyatt announced that the museum on 2145 N.E. 36^th St. needs more space to grow. The museum is already extremely filled with exhibits from the Air National Guard, the Gulf War, and World War II. Most of the exhibit items are from War World II. The museum seems to have a plug in it at the moment, with no more space to grow.

The museum is one of the best state-run military museums. It stands in a 15-acre park with 27,000 square feet of exhibit space. The Legislature funds the museum through the Forty-Fifth Infantry Division Association and the Oklahoma Military Department, which is the closest thing it has to fundraising. Anyone who wants to pay the dues is eligible for membership to the association. More revenue comes from gift shop purchases and donations by patrons.

The Forty-Fifth Infantry Division was created following World War I from the four states of Oklahoma , Arizona , Colorado and New Mexico . In 1923, the division was organized. The first time the members from Oklahoma camped together was in 1924.

Before World War II, the division was used to keep order when disasters occurred. They were also used to keep peace during times of political unrest. In September 1940, the division was ordered to attend a training program. From there, the division's federal service time began at Fort Still , Oklahoma . They also trained at Camp Pickett , Virginia , Pine Camp, New York, Camp Berkely , Texas , and Fort Devens , Massachusetts . The division was in combat in World War II for 511 days, along with several other wars.

Now, the Forty-Fifth Infantry Division Museum offers exhibits from these wars and a library of documentary material that relates to the division's service. The museum is a really great place to visit for those who are interested in the Forty-Fifth Infantry Division, and for those who are not. There is an interesting piece of history for everyone.

In my opinion, the first and best reason to visit Oklahoma City is that it's the most immaculate city with over a half-million people in the nation. Residents here offer top of the line hospitality and graciousness. Everywhere you look, you will see cars stopping for pedestrians, giving them the right of way. You will also find yourself being greeted by locals no matter where you are.

While visiting Oklahoma City, you will find kindness and compassion. Visiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, as heart-wrenching as it is, will let you view a tribute to the 168 people, 19 of which were children, who died in 1995 in the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. News clips and testimonials truly emphasize the caring and giving that each resident possesses.

Oklahoma City holds the largest collection in the entire world of noted artist, Dale Chihuly's, blown glass sculptures. They can be viewed at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Arts and museum's abound in Oklahoma City. A visit to the Civic Center Music Hall, the Lyric Theatre, the Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and Shakespeare at the Botanical Gardens, are great way to enjoy the city‘s arts life. Visitors will find history and heritage of the city everywhere they turn. Today is the Grand Opening of the Edmond Children's Learning Center at the Edmond Historical Society & Museum. Kids will get to paint their way into history, enjoy the sweet singing of a children's choir, have their picture made by a caricature, and explore the new center. Children will also get to eat kid inspired treats and appetizers.

The Children's Learning Center is inspired by early Edmond and made up of a General Store, a Sheriff's Office, a Prairie house, a Train Station, and Citizens Bank of Edmond. For smaller children, the center provides a Toddler Garden. And, the fun doesn't end there. Children get to learn all about Edmond animals by exploring the Touch & Learn animal section.

The Touch & Learn animal section is full of native animal bones, skins, and other hands on activities from Oklahoma. The Center also has a Tee-Pee section for children to learn about Edmond's Native American History. And, children will learn fun facts that adorn the walls about the great City of Edmond as they walk through the center.

The Children's Learning Center is great for kids and adults of all ages. It gives the perfect opportunity for Edmond residents and visitors to have fun while learning many great things about animals and Edmond's history. And, best of all, it's free for everyone to enjoy.

It's that time of year again to celebrate the Edmond Community Picnic. The event will be Thursday, August 18^th, from 6-8 at Hafer Park in the #3 Pavilion. The Community Picnic is free for all Edmond residents. So, give your kitchen a rest for the evening and come on out to enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks.

The event is for residents of all ages. Kids will enjoy a moonwalk, clowns, balloon animals, and face painting. And, everyone will enjoy the Edmond Police Department as they perform a motorcycle demonstration.

Sponsors of the event are the Edmond Sun and Edmond Neighborhood Alliance. Both sponsors are great at helping our community grow strong friendships by getting us all together. The Community Picnic is a great time and place for communicating with other Edmond residents, and sharing stories about Edmond and its great community. You will meet people from all over the community, and run into many people you already know.

At the Community Picnic, you can also meet politicians from the city, the Sun staff employees, city employees, and learn about what's happening in Edmond's neighborhoods.

Wind Power To Completely Power The University Of Oklahoma

By 2013, the University of Oklahoma will be using wind power to power the entire university. The school will, over time, purchase all its electric power from Electric's wind power division.

A powerful wind farm near Woodward, Oklahoma will generate the power needed for the university. When the wind farm's construction is complete, it will be called O.U. Spirit Wind Farm.

Oklahoma City, and most of the state, possess very large amounts of wind energy, ranking Oklahoma 6^th in the US with installed wind energy capacity. Adding wind farms in Oklahoma will also help boost the state's economy. And, best of all, most Oklahoma residents are happy about the state using renewable energy.

Early Oklahoma settlers used wind energy to power their well pumps to make farming in the area possible. So, it looks like it's time we do what the early settlers of Oklahoma did and get back to renewable energy.

The University of Oklahoma will also start using more vehicles that are powered by compressed natural gas, and the university will be opening its own compressed natural gas refueling center by November.

Edmonds First Ever Green Festival

On September 5^th 2008, Edmond, Oklahoma will have its first green festival starting at 6:00pm. The festival will continue on Saturday at 2:00 pm and Sunday at 2:00 pm at Stephenson Park.

Just three months ago, the Getting Green not-for-profit organization was founded by Mark Neighbors. The Getting Green organization was established to encourage all Americans to be more environmentally friendly. Getting Green, will show everyone how to live ten to twenty percent more green.

Many people across the Nation have already taken small steps, sometimes huge steps, to become more environmentally friendly. But there are still many who think that going green will affect their lifestyle too much. And, that is why Getting Green was so important to Mark Neighbors. He is ready and willing to show everyone that getting green will not change your lifestyle.

The festival will include learning opportunities and entertainment. There will be a new speaker every hour giving you steps and ideas to get green, along with twelve bands for your listening pleasure. Guest speakers topics will include eco-friendly practices for businesses, green architecture and wind power benefits. There will be exhibitors and sponsors with tables set up to show, hands on, how to get green.

Edmond Electric will be providing power for the event by using wind energy during the day and solar energy at night.

Edmond Is A Great Place For Kids

The City of Edmond, Oklahoma has so many activities and attractions for kids, and now it will soon have one more. The First Presbyterian Church of Edmond will begin the process of adding a new building for Edmond's youth. The Church received a $410,000 gift for the project.

The total cost of the new building will be around $1.5 million. Now that the church has at least 60% of that, planning has begun. This generous gift has really sped up the process. This will be a great addition to Edmond.

Edmond, Oklahoma is a family-friendly community. If you are looking for a great place to raise a family that caters to its youth, you will find it in the City of Edmond.
