It is tough to compete in a capitalist world. With businesses offering the same types of products to the same market segments, competition can be extremely tough.  In a free market, the secret to experiencing long-term success lies in the ability of the company to establish brands that people will purchase over and over again.  Aside from creating good quality products that people would want to buy, the company must create for each product, a unique "identity" that people can relate with. This is what successful branding is about.  With all else being equal, a product that has a strong image will beat out a product that is less known.

Social media like Twitter, Facebook, Multiply and Flickr can help companies establish and strengthen brand values.  By using all these free and widely-accessible media, companies can push brand values more easily to the public.  When a company keeps transmitting consistent messages to the public through social media, the public learns to identify specific logos, colors, emotions and other values to a product. This will allow consumers to differentiate your product from the sea of products available in the market.  With different options available to people, the one with the most exposure and effective advertising are usually the product that stays at the top of people's minds.

Companies that do not have huge marketing and advertising budgets can take advantage of Twitter and other social media that offers free services to transmit marketing and branding messages to the public. By using social media to strengthen its brand, a company is essentially separating itself from the competition.

Apart from transmitting your marketing messages to the public to separate you from the competition, you can also use social media to do research for information on what your competitors are doing. Knowing your competition will allow you to create products and marketing campaigns that will help you beat the competition.

If you want to truly take advantage of social media for marketing and branding, you need to invest time on social media.  It can be helpful if you hired a virtual assistant who will monitor social media for information and who will also post messages online so that your company can participate fully in social media.
