Economic enhancement presentation
A public presentation of the South Downtown Economic Enhancement Strategy will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the Elks Building ballroom at 1174 N. 1st St. in Abilene. Hyett Palma, the city of Abilene's consultant, will conduct the presentation.
The economic enhancement strategy under development is for the South Downtown Abilene area, bounded by N. 6th Street on the north, S. 7th Street on the south, Treadaway Boulevard on the east and Pine and Butternut streets on the west.

American Realty Capital Trust Inc. plans to acquire a newly constructed freight facility entirely net leased to FedEx Freight in the coming weeks. The firm will buy up the 152,600-square-foot Houston-area facility by June 15 for some $30.9 million from seller PinPoint Commercial. FedEx currently occupies the space under an existing lease with a primary lease term of 15 years, having commenced in October 2008. The agreement includes two successive five-year extensions. The ripples in the Midland and Odessa economies caused by last fall's plunge in crude oil and natural gas prices have grown to waves as they move through the region's general economy.
The Midland-Odessa Regional Economic Index, prepared by Amarillo economist Karr Ingham, showed the biggest month-to-month drop in its history - 2.2 points - and remains barely positive, up 1.1 percent from April 2008. Ingham predicted the index could turn negative next month.

From his seat in Amarillo, economist Karr Ingham peers into Abilene's future and sees the end of a local recession -- sometime in 2010.
Ingham said that according to the figures he pulls for the Abilene Economic Index, the area entered a financial slide in late 2008, and for six months now has seen an economic decline in a variety of areas, ranging from automobile sales to airport enplanements to home sales.

The Amarillo City Commission has divided more than $1.1 million in federal stimulus dollars which will pay for three road improvements. Also approved was a wind farm grant.
The agreements approved by the Amarillo City Commission dedicate:

With the scramble toward alternative energy focusing on solar power and natural gas, wind energy is also starting to take its place as a viable, natural source. As a result, Abilene is becoming the target location for wind-oriented companies that need space.
A local group, the Abilene Industrial Foundation, has constructed 100,000 sf of speculative space for wind-related businesses.

West Texas reigns as center of the booming new industry

Though they live in the wind energy capital of the world, some people may grow so accustomed to the booming wind energy industry that the newness has worn off.
But much more is yet to come whether people are paying attention or not, Greg Wortham, director of the West Texas Wind Energy Consortium, said.
Three wind energy companies in the Big Country have events scheduled Tuesday: one a grand opening, one a groundbreaking ceremony and another an open house.
