Keeping Its Eye on the Prize
Already one of the biggest economic players in the country, Texas now has its eyes on a higher prize: increasing its competitiveness on a global scale. In December 2007, Governor Perry launched the Governor's Competitiveness Council to help the state address the challenges and opportunities facing Texas in a fast-paced global marketplace and to help ensure a prosperous future for the state's economy.
Made up of 29 government, industry, and education leaders, the council was charged with the task of identifying barriers to global competitiveness and figuring out how state resources can help Texas' … (0 comments)

Flirting with 200,000 population: Growth slow, steady
Amarillo city planners estimate the Amarillo population to be right around 191,514 for 2009. At the city's slow-and-steady growth rate of 1 or 2 percent a year, the population likely won't break the 200,000 ceiling by 2010, City Planning Director Kelley Shaw said. Despite a mostly growth-is-good mantra, the likelihood of staying under 200,000 for the 2010 census has some City officials sighing with relief.
If the 2010 census determines Amarillo has reached 200,000, the federal contribution to Amarillo's transit system would be cut in half and then zeroed out in about two … (0 comments)

Abilene, Texas - The Heart of the Wind Region
By TJ Sullivan / www.TJSullivanLA.com

Broach the subject of wind energy most anywhere in America and, more often than not, you'll awaken visions of the decades-old wind farm in California's San Gorgonio Pass, a veritable airfield of 80-foot-tall, 40-kilowatt turbine units that achieved icon status thanks to a few fleeting seconds of screen time in the 1980's movie "Rain Man."

Iconic as the place may be, however, that windy stretch of Interstate 10 is actually more than 1,000 miles from the true wind-energy center of … (0 comments)
