fort hunt: Part of Alexandria is not in Alexandria! - 10/12/09 06:50 AM
It's true: a portion of Alexandria is not in the City of Alexandria at all!
This is because of how the Commonwealth of Virginia organizes its jurisdictions. The state is organized into counties and county-like jurisdictions called "independent cities" or just "cities". In most respects, a city is not much more than a county that wants to be called a city. For example, the county of Arlington is larger, more populous and more urban than most cities in Virginia; while the city of Falls Church is about the same size as the town of Vienna which is in Fairfax County.

fort hunt: Stratford Landing - 10/03/09 08:53 AM
The east bank of Little Hunting Creek is called Stratford Landing . Stratford on the Potomac is near the point where Little Hunting Creek enters the Potomac.
LIke Arcturus, this natural harbor was at one time a boaters' get-away: the perfect place for DC anglers to escape from the city.
There are few remnants of the fishing shacks here. One is more likely to find a multi-million dollar estate home.
Some homes on have piers and docks, many are have near waterfront exposure. Here's a list of what's available in Stratford Landing including both Stratford Landing and Stratford on the Potomac.

fort hunt: Hollin Hills a unique Fairfax County neighborhood - 06/25/09 09:20 AM

Designed by renowned architect Charles M. Goodman and developed by Robert Davenport in the late forties, Hollin Hills brought contemporary style to home construction in Northern Virginia.
The community of houses with large expanses of glass, sleek lines, and unusual siting has earned national recognition from the early fifties to the present.
Landscape designs for Hollin Hills homes were prepared by landscape architects Lou Bernard Voigt, Dan Kiley and Eric Paepcke to reflect the belief that interior spaces should flow into exteriors, and that grounds of one home should merge with the next, all in a park-like setting. These original … (0 comments)

fort hunt: Fort Hunt Road - 05/18/09 06:48 AM
Fort Hunt Road (in yellow) runs from Rt. 1 to Fort Hunt Park.
Through its course Fort Hunt Road runs generally parallel to the George Washington Parkway in the East and Rt. 1 to West.
The defining geologic features of the area are the Potomac River, the floodplain and the inland hieghts. The Potomac River is most obvious on the map. Less obvious is the extent of the floodplain. The flood plain is generally narrow, extending not much further than the George Washington Parkway. Some of the best views in the area are found on the ridge which separates the floodplain … (0 comments)

We'll miss her ... The Martha Washington Library is definitely one of the features and benefits of living in and around the 22307 area code. Martha Washington serves houses and townhouses of Bucknell Manor, the adorable garden-style condos of Belle View, the scenic condos at River Towers, the manors and homes of Belle Haven and homes and families of Fort Hunt with a broad selection of books and media. The staff is always helpful and pleasant. I and the Alexandria Gaming Group have made great use of the community room on numerous occaisions. So December 20th will be a sad day … (0 comments)

fort hunt: Villamay, Westgrove & Marlan Forest --- Three of Fort Hunt's finest neighborhoods. - 10/08/08 09:36 AM
This is wonderful neighborhood with easy access to parks, bike trails and jogging paths. These homes have generous proportions and ample lots.
Heading south, one will encounter Westgrove first. Westgroves homes, many built in the fifties and sixties, are sturdy, brick homes with tasteful, colonial touches. Like much of New Alexandria, Westgrove lies below the uplands, but still well outside most of the River's floodplain.
Villamay homes are perched on the bluff, and many have wonderful vistas to the River and beyond the Potomac to Maryland. Villamay homes are often split level characterized by enormous rooms with a thoroughly modern feel.

Fort Hunt Park consists of 105 acres located along the Potomac River in Fairfax County, Virginia, approximately 6 miles south of Old Town Alexandria. The Park is a part of the over 7,000 acres that make up the George Washington Memorial Parkway. The lands of Fort Hunt Park were originally a part of George Washington's personal farm and were became a military outpost and now serves as a picnic area and nature park.

fort hunt: Martha Washington Library - 08/04/08 07:13 AM

The Martha Washington Library is part of the Fairfax County Library System. It was built in 1969 which makes it one of the oldest libraries in the Fairfax County system. The library is situated on Fort Hunt Road near the Belle View Shopping Center which is at the intersection of Belle View Boulevard, Beacon Hill Road and Fort Hunt.
Because it was built in 1969, the library has the modernistic archtecture of the late sixties, early seventies.  The most distinctive feature of this design is the "hat" on the building.  There is a 6 to 10 ft. feature on the … (0 comments)

Fort Hunt Road meanders from Rt. 1 south of Old Town at Huntington over about 5 miles to Mount Vernon. Fort Hunt Road runs generally parallel to the George Washington Parkway where it runs south from Alexandria to Mount Vernon.  Where the GW Parkway runs along the Potomac at the river's edge, Fort Hunt road climbs up to the ridge described in detail here.
