Originally known as Spring Garden Farm having about 4 acres of land the United States government bought additional land giving its’ current size. The Alexandria National Cemetery was burial ground for the soldiers who had passed away because of diseases, training, illnesses and results of the Civil War in the Alexandria area that was then exceeded the capacity and brought about the construction of Arlington

This sign posted in front of the Franconia Post Office on Franconia Road in Fairfax County VA by the Fairfax County History Commission bears a brief history of Franconia and the people who were a part of it. Franconia's Pride "‘Frankhonia Farm' was situated on 191 acres purchased in 1859 by Alexandria merchant and businessman William Fowle from John Broders of Oak Grove Farm. His son, Robert Rollins Fowle, sold 18 acres to the Alexandria & Fredericksburg Railway Company in 1871 for a station which was named after the farm. Old Town Virginia is a historic area of Alexandria. Old Town was a busy port during the Colonial, Revolutionary and Civil War times. Some of the more interesting historic elements of Old Town include, Gadsby's Tavern, a replica of George Washington's house, and Robert E. Lee's childhood home. There are also many museums to experience some of the history including, The Stabler Apothecary Museum , The Torpedo Factory Art Center, The Lyceum, and many antique shops and historic homes. The Appomattox statue of a Confederate Soldier is also located in Old Town and is part of the Civil War history.

Unincorporated Rosslyn offers great views and beautiful landscapes in Arlington County, Virginia. The area sits in view of the Potomac River, The Arlington Cemetary, and Washington, D.C. Rosslyn is also home to the United States Marine Corps War Memorial and Freedom Park. The name Rosslyn came from a local farm behind the shore. The farm was known as Ross Lynn, owned by William and Carolyn Ross. In the 1860's Rosslyn's largest development was a large brewery. It was changed to the Cherry Crush Bottling Co. after prohibition. In south Arlington County lies Fairlington, a neighborhood made up of townhouse apartments. Most of these townhouses were built in the 1940's. It was constructed during World War II and paid for by the Defense Homes Corporation. The name "Fairlington" was created by combining the county names where it is located, Fairfax and Arlington. Fairlington's history goes back as far as 1756 when the area was owned by John Carlyle, a friend of President George Washington. From 1861-1870 the land was under military occupation. Clarendon is located in Arlington County, Virginia. In 1900 Clarendon was planned on a hill on Wilson Blvd. (formerly Georgetown Falls Road). Once streetcars came to the area in the early 20th century this part of Arlington County was very busy with travelers. The streetcars were in service until the 1930's. In 1920 the town was considered for incorporation but was soon shot down by the court system. However, it was selected for Arlington County's first post office. The Clarendon Metro Station opened in the 80's and offered the Clarendon area a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, bars, office space and apartments.
