(MONEY Magazine) -- Most of the news lately about real estate has been dismal: Home prices are swooning, foreclosures ballooning.

30-year mortgage rate close to 4% Fed, housing data don’t shake low rates: Freddie Mac By Amy Hoak, MarketWatch
CHICAGO (MarketWatch) — Mortgage rates held steady this week, a result of a sluggish economy and investor worries over European debt markets, Freddie Mac’s chief economist said on Thursday.
Average rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages remained unchanged at 4.09% for the week ending Sept. 22, according to Freddie Mac’s weekly survey of conforming mortgage rates. The mortgage averaged 4.37% a year ago.
