design: What's Hot this Year in Home Decor? This Vancouver Home Stager went to Investigate-Part 2 - 03/11/12 10:03 AM
What's Hot this Year in Home Decor? This Vancouver Home Stager went to Investigate-Part 2 WOOD AND ROOTS – Twisted, gnarled roots are all the rage this year and serve well as bases for glass coffee tables, and console tables. Their interesting shapes serve as a naturally beautiful but functional piece of art. The addition of wood also gives the eye a rest from all the shiny, sparkly accessories that are de rigueur. The combination of matte and shiny objects creates depth and interest. NOSTALGIA – What’s old is new again. I’m transported in time when

VANCOUVER STAGER HOB NOBS WITH DESIGN ROYALTY-PART I GENEVIEVE GORDER – DEAR GENEVIEVE As a Vancouver Home Stager, I feel it’s important to keep on top of the latest design trends and happenings in the design industry. On a recent visit to the Las Vegas Furniture Market, we were delighted to meet New York Interior Designer, Genevieve Gorder. From left to right: Peg Barcelo Jackson-Fluff My House, Genevieve Gorder, Me (Sally Weatherley-Exit Stage Right, Cathy Lee-CL Design Services I remember seeing Genevieve for the first time on TLC’s Trading Spaces. design: Vancouver Aquarium - Colour Inspiration for a Vancouver Home Stager - 01/08/12 12:41 PM
Vancouver Aquarium - Colour Inspiration for a Vancouver Home Stager As a Vancouver Home Stager, I'm always looking for the latest colour trends and great colour combinations. The best place to find colours that work together and inspire is in nature. A recent visit to the Vancouver Aquarium opened my eyes to a whole new world of colour combinations. These jelly fish are a real show stopper. The complimentary colours, blue and orange, create a vibrant, attention grabbing sight. The pink, cream and brown combination here is one of my favourites. Not only are the colours beautiful, but the

design: Are You a Lover Or A Fighter? Are You A Chopper And A Thrower? - Vancouver Home Staging - 11/06/11 01:30 PM
Are You A Lover Or A Fighter? Are You A Chopper And A Thrower? - Vancouver Home Staging I was sitting down with a cup of tea and relishing the most recent arrival of one of my favourite design magazines (unfortunately, I can't remember which one), when I came across a fun article that made me stop and ponder... Oh, and no, I don't really care if you're a lover or a fighter - I just thought that might grab your attention (he he he) Am I a chopper? Am I a folder? Hmmmm. I thought I'd toss this question out

design: Before & After Photos - Home Staging Vancouver, B.C. - 10/20/11 09:34 PM
Before & After Photos - Home Staging Vancouver, B.C. My company, Exit Stage Right, had the pleasure of staging this condo for sale in the Cambie area of Vancouver. This property was an absolute delight to stage. The building is only three years old, and it has a lovely view of downtown Vancouver and the mountains to the North. The finishes are high end, and there are many professionals in this building, including many in the medical profession, due to its proximity to Vancouver General Hospital. We sourced furniture that would fit well in a condo-sized setting, using several glass pieces

design: A Bird's Eye View - Vancouver Home Staging - 10/20/11 12:49 PM
A Bird's Eye View - Vancouver Home Staging One of the pleasures of being a Home Stager, is seeing my city, Vancouver, from various view points. I live on the North Shore, and view Vancouver from atop a mountain. However, it's always fun to look at the city from a completely different perspective. The problem with living on a mountain, is that you don't actually see the mountain, because you're on it! Here are some photos of the view from a condo we recently staged. This condo is in the Cambie area, a fantastic location, close to great shopping and restaurants.

design: Paris Haute Couture Meets Vancouver Home Staging - 10/19/11 01:40 PM
Paris Haute Couture Meets Vancouver Home Staging When I was in Paris recently... one of my favourite past times was keeping a keen eye out for the latest in clothing fashion. Whether through observing well dressed Parisians rushing off to work in their 4" stilettos on cobbled streets, or getting a glimpse of the latest scarf or purse as it rushed by, it was evident that Paris Haute Couture is alive and well, and living in Paris! This window display in a clothing store in Paris certainly caught my eye. I love the combination of the colour red with the leopard

design: What's In A Name? That Which We Call A Rose-Vancouver Home Staging - 10/09/11 10:21 PM
What's In A Name? That Which We Call A Rose-Vancouver Home Staging When I was in Paris (oops, there I go again!), I would walk down from our hotel to the local cafe for my daily cafe au lait and croissant. Every day, I would pass this flower store on Victor Hugo street, and just looking at the display of roses would set my heart a flutter. I had an emotional response to this flower shop. Actually, the store didn't even sell flowers in general, but specifically, roses! My mind wandered back to Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet play, and the quote:

design: Design Week - Paris 2011 - A Vancouver Home Stager/Designer's Take - 10/08/11 02:55 PM
Design Week - Paris 2011 - A Vancouver Home Stager/Designer's Take "When I was in Paris"... Oh, I'm sorry, but I just love saying that! When I was in Paris this past September, my trip actually coincided with Paris Design Week. The whole city embraces design, and the local shops display their take on design. There is also a design trade show, which I was planning on attending, but I got my dates mixed up, and missed the show by a day! Oh, believe me, I'm still kicking myself for that one! Not to be deterred, I grabbed my camera and

design: Steve Jobs - You Made Me Love Computers - Thank You! - 10/06/11 01:04 PM
Steve Jobs - You Made Me Love Computers - Thank You! I was saddened to read of Steve Job's passing. Ironically, I first heard this sad news when I went to pick up my newspaper from the front door. The Vancouver Sun newspaper had a wonderful article about this great man. That said, I did love reading President Obama's comment: "And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented". I could go on about what a great visionary Steve Jobs was, and delve

design: Post Cards from Paris - Who is this Statue and Where is it Located? - 09/14/11 03:03 PM
Post Cards from Paris - Who is this Statue and Where is it Located? For those of you who don't know, VB (aka Vegas Bob) has a great group organized called "Statues Around the World", where you can post interesting statues you've taken photos of in your travels. Well, for those of you who know me, I'm presently sitting in my favourite city in the world, Paris. Did you know that Paris is chock-a-block with statues? I found this particularly beautiful statue today, and couldn't resist posting it. Ok, I've given you a huge hint... of course, this statue is in

design: Staging is Like a Cement Truck - Vancouver Home Staging - 06/03/11 06:08 PM
Staging is Like a Cement Truck - Vancouver Home Staging I was sitting in downtown traffic yesterday. It was a miserable day. The rain was pouring continual buckets, and I was stuck in 5 o'clock traffic and a construction site. I looked over, and there was the cheeriest cement truck (sorry, ready-mix truck) I'd ever seen. Several thoughts crossed my mind, as I sat there, waiting for the officious flag person to switch their hand sign from Stop to Slow... First, I thought, wow, design is really all around us. We come across it when we least expect it. Someone had

design: The Secret Garden - Afternoon Tea in Vancouver, B.C. - 05/28/11 06:25 PM
The Secret Garden - Afternoon Tea in Vancouver, B.C. Who doesn't enjoy the wonderful tradition of Afternoon Tea? We recently had a lovely day visiting the Kerrisdale area for a little shopping, girl talk and tea. My mum was over visiting from Vancouver Island, so my sister and I rounded up our teenage daughters, and we made an outing of it. First stop were the various little boutiques and food shops along 41st, where we found all sorts of unusual items to purchase. Yes, I even picked up a few unusual accessories for my Home Staging business. Of course, shopping works

design: Dreamy Décor at the Home & Interior Design Show - 09/15/10 12:10 AM
Dreamy Décor at the Home & Interior Design Show Modern, elegant, contemporary, laid back, relaxed. These would be adjectives I’d use to describe the furniture styles at the fall Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show. One of my favourite displays was Once A Tree Furniture. Beautiful dining tables constructed of spectacular woods. I also loved the huge, organic oversized vases they had displayed on the table, one standing up, and one laying down. Wouldn’t this make a great centerpiece on a table in a staged home? Urban Barn had some great, new, contemporary art and I

design: Foliage, Flowers & More at the Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show - 09/14/10 12:03 AM
Foliage, Flowers & More at the Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show Drinks and appies were on the agenda at the Vancouver Home & Interior Design Show this past Thursday. As a show opener, Cookworks offered some amazing gourmet appetizers, and a no host bar was set up, to enjoy a nice glass of wine while taking in the sights and sounds at the most recent fall Home Show. Wendy Casey and I bumped elbows with Glen Peloso (a Canadian design celebrity) and star of “Take This House & Sell It” and “Restaurant Makeover”, while milling around the reception

design: Whimsy Can Sell Your House - North Vancouver Home Staging - 09/07/10 12:49 AM
Whimsy Can Sell Your House - North Vancouver Home Staging Recently, we staged a West Coast contemporary home in North Vancouver, B.C. This home has a youthful, modern appearance, and we wanted to attract a young, urban couple, or young family. One of the key ways to make this home more appealing, was to add a little bit of whimsy to the decor. We didn't want to take ourselves too seriously. We decided to add a little humour to this space. Above is a photo of the kitchen eat-in area. Using mid-century modern furniture added a fun, retro feeling. We

design: Clap On... Clap Off!!! - 09/05/10 01:49 PM
Clap On... Clap Off!!! Who doesn't remember that infamous commercial - clap your hands, and the lamp will magically turn on! Well, I found a really neat lamp the other day. I promise, it's not a "clap on, clap off" lamp, but it does seem magical. When the lamp is off, it looks like just any other normal, generic lamp. However, when you turn the lamp on, magically, the image of flowers radiates through the light of the lamp shade. I was dying to use these lamps for staging, and had the chance the other day. I used black and white

design: Does Your Home Staging Look Like an Antipasto Platter? - I Hope So! - 09/03/10 12:37 AM
Does Your Home Staging Look Like an Antipasto Platter? - I Hope So! I belong to a cooking website called Rouxbe. This site was started up a few years ago here in Vancouver, and now has paid subscribers from all over the world. The cool thing about this site is that instead of publishing recipes, it has very clear video instructions on how to make each recipe. What that heck does this have to do with home staging, you ask? Well, I was creating an antipasto platter the other day for a party I was invited to, and decided to

design: Quail's Gate Winery - Cedar, Sunshine and Sensational Wines - 09/01/10 12:17 AM
Quail's Gate Winery - Cedar, Sunshine and Sensational Wines On our recent trip to Kelowna and the local wineries of this area, another winery that stood out, besides Mission Hill, was Quail's Gate Winery. Also located on the Westbend near Kelowna, Quail's Gate boasts a beautiful location, overlooking the Boucherie Mountain Bench and the Okanagan lake. For you history buffs, a little background on Quail's Gate... This winery has been in the Stewart family since the turn of the century. Richard Stewart Senior arrived in the Okanagan in 1908 from County Kildare in Ireland, and started growing fruit. His

design: Exceptional Wine Meets Superb Design at Mission Hill - 08/16/10 03:42 PM
Exceptional Wine Meets Superb Design at Mission Hill As a Vancouver Home Stager, I am always on the lookout for great design. Design is all around us, and all we have to do is open our eyes and be exposed to the beauty that surrounds us. Whether the design is natural or man made, successful design will always speak to our souls. I was very fortunate to travel recently to British Columbia's wine country, near Kelowna, where I toured numerous wineries. One winery that really stands out from a design point of view, is Mission Hill. The proprietor is Anthony von
