For teenagers who have set roots in their neighborhoods and local schools having to relocate can seem like the end of the world for your child, children and teenager. Let's face it moving is not easy for anyone but for a teenager it could feel like the end of the world and their life is over. Here are a few tips to help your teenager get through moving or relocating to a new area.
My Life Is Over
If you make the decision to relocate while your teenager is still attending school, it would probably be accepted a little better if you told them immediately and not wait until the moving truck is pulling into of the driveway. Not only will it benefit your teenager to allow it to start sinking in their head but it will give them time to say their good byes and spend the time left with their friends locally. It really gives your teenager a chance to prepare not only physically but mentally too!
Not A Teenage Dream - Don't React - Listen
Your teenager may not take moving well and will probably have you questioning the decision of relocating due to the reaction your child may have. Its wise to listen to your child's concerns and remember this is very normal as they feel they will be pulled away from people that they love and fear that they will have difficulty in the new city and state. Although teenagers seem to change rapidly they sometimes do not handle change to well. Its very important to allow your teenager to show and express their true feelings and be sure to be there and reaffirm that you will help them through this transition.
It's All About Your Teen
Share and talk about all the benefits of relocating for your teenager, forget the new job or the benefit for the family. Its a tough transition for anyone but especially for teenagers and children. Let's talk what's in it for the teenager and how to make this new chapter in their lives a little easier to take. Believe me that's how teens think, as they also think their life is over when a variety of events take place in their young lives. That means to ease your child's mind and do a little homework. Today teenagers can do their own research just by using google, the best thing to do is remind them of all the things they love to do today, they can still do it anywhere just got to find out how and where they can do them in their new location.
Help Them With Acceptance
Teenagers seem to accept things when they play an active role and feel in control. Its might take some time for the move to grow on them. To help get their minds on the negative have them help you pack, track down a moving company or help you hold a garage sale. Maybe throw a bbq or going away party and host it together. Your teenager will probably feel better if they felt they were not in it alone. It could help you build a stronger bond and make the move a little bit easier.
Encourage Your Teenager To Stay Connected
Facebook and text messaging keeps everyone connected these days. Teenagers are no exception and many seem to only connect in this way today. Encourage your teenager to stay connected and remind them even though you are moving, their friends could remain in their life long enough to become life long friends. With video, pictures and social networks friendships can last a life time.
