I am well aware active duty military personnel with orders to one of the Northern Virginia military installations visit the "dot mil" sites long before they arrive in the area. They are very familiar with what services are available and where they are located at the various instsllations.
What is not provided by the DOD sites is an online directory of life beyond the guard post. Over the past 33 years as real estate brokers my husband and I have served hundreds of transferees (military and civilian) who relocated to Northern Virginia. One of my favorite places to shop is small local hardware stores. They have a "flavor" that the Lowe's and Home Depot stores do not and never will. The J.E.Rice Hardware Store is located in the Manassas Shopping Center on Mathis Avenue.
